3 Soft Grunge Beauty Looks for a Summer Switch-Up

If you’re like me, getting tired of the same hair color and styles happens pretty often. This summer, I’ve been experimenting with different beauty looks, one of those being soft grunge. Because I’m normally simplistic and girly when it comes to my beauty routines, I created these looks to change things up a bit. My inspiration for these looks come from all over: Tumblr’s soft grunge aesthetic, Ariana Grande’s hair ring look, the peachy makeup trend, and Pinterest ideas for hair chalk. All of this inspiration helped me create three unique and edgy soft grunge beauty looks for those of you who are looking to switch up your look.

Braids and Rings

I recently have been seeing hair rings everywhere but was nervous that this look was too edgy for myself. This Fashionista, however, completely rocks it. By channeling our inner Ari, we decided to go for this look. Hair rings spice up a simple French braid by giving it a trendy vibe. They’re super easy to put in and take out. This hairstyle is perfect for the beach, especially if you’re sick of that messy beach bun look.

Think Pink

Pink may not be the most “grunge,” but definitely fits the soft grunge style I am going for. I have used hair chalk many times and absolutely love it. It’s different, fun, and even easy to do, but the best part is that it’s not permanent. Sometimes it’s hard to commit to a crazy hairstyle, but because hair chalk rinses right out, it makes it easy to own a crazy look, even if it’s just for a day! This pink hair chalk was perfect for my goal of soft grunge beauty. All you have to do is wet the hair, apply chalk with gloves on, let dry, and apply heat (I curled my hair once dried).

Soften Things Up

With these intense hairstyles, I decided to soften things up with peach makeup. Peach eyeshadow is all the rage right now, and now I know why. It’s such a pretty color and looks so natural. It’s also perfect for the summer. To make sure our looks weren’t too edgy, the peach eyeshadow and lip we both have on softens the look up, ultimately creating the perfect soft grunge dimension between the hair and makeup.

The Perfect Blush Pink Pieces

Pink can be a stereotypical color, but I think blush pink is much more simple and classy. Blush pink complements so many skin tones, which means that the color can look good on anyone. Here are some of my favorite ways to spice up an outfit with this beautiful color.

1—A mesh pullover hoodie. Mesh is very “in” right now. A hoodie can be worn for a casual, athletic look with leggings or it can be rocked with cute boyfriend jeans. Your pick!

2—A bralette. This blush pink bralette is a mesh and lace material with floral details. It can be worn under a dress or low-cut shirt or you can simply keep yourself comfortable and wear it under whatever you want.

3—A velvet or suede dress. This oh-so-in velvet dress would be perfect for a night out with your girls or a date night!

4—Maxi skirts. Long skirts are always fun, especially if you find one with a slit or that shows a little bit of skin. A pink skirt with a slit is perfect if you are looking to show some skin and bask in the attention. There is nothing wrong with showing off a little leg!

5—A small patterned purse. Everyone needs a pink purse in their life, so why not choose a fun one? Dolce & Gabbana’s trendy pineapple purse is one-of-a-kind.

6—A shoulder bag. The Givenchy Antigona Mini Leather Shoulder bag is the perfect size crossbody—not too big and not too small. The perfect look, the perfect size, and the perfect color are a win-win-win combination!

7—Shoes. Valentino’s Garavani Suede Ballet Slippers are the definition of perfection. They are cute, comfy, and can be an everyday staple. Dress them up with a cute dress or down with rolled jeans and a casual top.

Add Color to Your Wardrobe This Summer

I have always loved fashion and beauty and I can remember watching runway shows and reading fashion magazines at a young age. I am also interested in a lot of things related to the arts: fashion, graphic design, architecture, makeup, and photography, so expect those kinds of posts from me on here. I believe that people express themselves through their style. In my eyes, everyone has their own unique style and it depends on how they rock it.

In this outfit, I am rocking a pink denim jacket, with a top I got from Forever 21 (similar) and denim pants from H&M. Before adding this jacket to my wardrobe, I felt drawn to it. I first saw it on a model wearing a higher end brand and searched for it everywhere until I found that it went on sale! I love this jacket because you can pair it with florals and other patterns for the spring without looking like too much.

After going through a period of minimalism. I noticed that I had filled my wardrobe with only black and white items. The funny thing is that I realized this the day I could not find my favorite black blouse in a pile of laundry filled with all my black clothing! From that day on, I promised myself that I was going to add more color to my wardrobe. For this outfit, I added heeled sandals for a more chic look, you can also swap these sandals out for sneakers if that’s your style.

Pink has always been one of my favorite colors and when I started adding color to my wardrobe, I started with the color pink. Luckily, blushes and pinks are a trendy color for the spring! If you are like me and you are in love with neutrals and would love to add more color to your wardrobe, now is the best time because the brightest colors are in trend right now. I would suggest adding your favorite color first!

This Color Combo is Perfect for Summer

Now that summer is here, it’s time to put away our dark clothes from past seasons (yes, that means even your favorite maroon sweater), and break out bright and colorful pieces you can rock in the sun! My favorite summer color combo, that seems to never go out of style is pale pink and white.

This pairing has the perfect amount of preppy-ness from the pop of pink in the dress shorts while keeping it classy and sophisticated with a simple, white top.

It’s no wonder that every time I go shopping, I somehow end up with six items all in the same color, yet I can never seem to put one back on the shelf. Do I really need six baby pink items? Probably not, but one thing for sure is this color looks fabulous on any sunny day.

To make this look even more summer-ready, sunglasses and sandals are a must! I added my navy blue sandals to stand out against the lighter colors in the outfit. Currently, I am obsessed with the Kate Spade Carolina sandals, but any navy pair will do! I also threw on my favorite shades from Ray-Ban.

Finally, to top off the look, don’t forget to wear your favorite nail polish for an extra pop of color and a chic outfit of the day!

Turn Heads by Going Neutral

Depending on your skin type, it can be tricky finding colors that will show off your best assets. People say that the color black goes with everything. This is true but I am here to extend that saying. Whatever your skin tone may be, the simple neutral palette is sure to make a statement. In this article, I will be discussing the ways that you will turn heads by looking pretty in pink and other neutral colors.

Personally, I have an ivory skin tone. Sometimes I will fall in love with clothing hanging on the rack but I will leave the dressing room disappointed because some colors just do not flatter me. Recently, there has been a serious interest in neutral colors. The spark of this neutral revolution was when I fell deeply in love with baby pink and beige. These colors are so simple yet elegant and can easily become accessorized by any daring piece. Neutrals are in and they are here to stay.

In the pictures throughout this article, you will see my baby pink romper accompanied by a tan colored tote with a gold monogrammed necklace. With the neutral color schemes, it is very easy to accessorize. You cannot go wrong with either gold and silver jewelry to make the outfit pop.

The neutral color scheme is a great clothing color but it also works perfectly for accessories such as handbags and necklaces. For instance, often times I will find myself running errands dressing in all-black. Adding a baby pink purse or perhaps my beige tote into the mix breaks up the dark vibes that you may be giving off without even noticing. Fashion celebrity icons such as the Kardashians have been setting the tone for neutrals. Neutral is no longer simplicity, it is something much more than that, a fashion statement.

The Pretty Popping Comeback of Pink

Major summer trend alert: pink has officially made its comeback, after being in the background for so long. In the early 2000s, the color pink was popular exclusively in some form of a sparkly camisole and has been forever remembered to have only been pulled off “correctly” by the iconic Elle Woods. However, it has made its comeback, and there’s officially no wrong way to think pink! From fuchsia to mauve, the choices are endless, and no matter what you chose it will undoubtedly have you turning heads this summer.

Like the weather, my current personal favorite shade of pink is hot, hot, hot; though I am also a huge fan of a dusty pink as well. My fashion tip to conquering the color with confidence is to remember that pink looks great with lots of texture and depth. For this look, I am wearing a sheer, flowy off-the-shoulder top. It is studded with buttons down the middle and Swiss dots on the bodice. The off-the-shoulder sleeves and sheer texture add an extra level of boldness to the outfit, while the dots and buttons are more subtly sweet.

I chose to pair this top with a short denim skirt and chunky white platform wedges. The faded blue in the denim allows the hot pink to really shine. Black jeans also look great with lighter pinks, and white really complements burnt pink. Same goes for the shoes; I like how bright the white looks with the pink, but you can mix and match with tan or even black. With a color so versatile, it almost seems like you can’t make a wrong choice with how to wear it.

Jewelry is another fun topic when it comes to pink. Because it comes in so many shades, you can wear any of your precious metals. I am a jewelry minimalist; small earrings, rings, and maybe a dainty anklet are the most you will get out of me. So for this look, I chose light gold pieces that kept the focus on my top but still complemented it. You can add a silver or black choker for an edgier vibe or keep things classy with pearls too! Pink goes with any type of personal style. This summer’s color is here to stay so let us be pretty, pink, and powerful in every way.

Dress to Express

My sister invited me to her university fashion show last March, and I was thrilled. Not only because I’d get to meet new people and see new collections and interesting brands, but also to start planning the outfit for the night. It was when I checked the dress code, “Dress to impress,” that I started thinking, “Wait a second. Do I need to impress somebody?”

At least that’s how “Dress to impress” sounds to me: Needing to impress someone with my outfit. Correct me if I’m wrong, but personally, I find this very confusing. When it comes to me planning my outfit, I always try to think how I would feel most comfortable. What should I wear in order to feel confident? How do I like the dress I’m trying on? Should I go for pink or yellow?

I don’t deny it: I wouldn’t mind my friends, my boyfriend, or a random person giving me a nice compliment on my new dress or lipstick. I’m quite positive that you’ll never harm anyone whenever you give a positive comment. However, I think you should always dress for yourself and not for anyone else.

When I lived in Sweden, I found it very bizarre when my friends gave me cute and friendly comments on the smallest things like earrings. The first time it felt kind of weird but also boosted my humor. But still, I never stopped wearing my favorite earrings that never actually got any compliments.

“Dress to impress,” but why not express instead? Express your inner self with clothes, makeup and other details that you like and that suit you. Express your personality and mood. Don’t bother if someone doesn’t like the pink jacket you just bought or thinks that you shouldn’t wear pink lipstick. If girly, pink lipstick is the thing you like, go for it!

Black and Pink and Cute All Over

Lighter colors are typically associated with the summertime because they keep you feeling light, fresh, and cool during the hot summer months. Although I love my black attire, I have to ditch the all black outfits during hot summer days. Now is the time to incorporate dark and light colors that complement each other into a look that will bring the lighter color out more and make it the focal point of your outfit!

One of my favorite summer pieces to wear is overalls. Overalls are so versatile and allow you to wear a crazy colored or patterned top while keeping it pulled together with solid color overalls. Overalls come in various shades and shapes and are quick to take off and on; unclip the hooks, and you’re good to go! I chose to wear black overalls with a “millennial pink” T-shirt. The contrast of the colors is really different and looks summery without being too far out of my comfort zone.

Being a makeup enthusiast, I love matching my makeup with my attire. For this look, I incorporated lots of pink and peachy colors to tie in with my shirt. The Stila Magnificent Metals Liquid Eye Shadows are essential for a bold going out look or if you’re just trying to make a statement with your eyes. They are pretty and sparkly, and they add a pop of color to any summer look. They also last for hours and can be used as an eyeliner.

I also can’t pass up the Sweet Peach palette from Too Faced. First of all, the smell is delicious! But more than that, this palette has some awesome peach and warm-toned colors to create a girly look on your eyes. As for highlighter, Anastasia’s collaboration with Nicole Guerriero is a staple makeup item you need in your bag. The sparkly pop of highlighter is a perfect touch to your look in the summer!

Pinks are perfect for summer because they’re bright, fun, and match with so much. I’m sure you’ve heard that “millennial pink” is trending, so why not try it for yourself? Throw on this peachy pink look with your favorite pink shirt and overalls and hit the street for some major retail therapy.

Sunday Brunch With a Side of Pink

Since coming to New York City, I’ve learned a handful of things: there is truly never a dull moment, not a day goes by where I don’t hear at least seven ambulances, and Sunday brunch is a universal love language among all of New York City.

It’s the perfect activity to end the weekend and start the week. City folks love brunching with their friends and treating themselves to that decadent French toast they’ve been thinking about. Of course, this being New York City, brunch is never simply just brunch.

A lot of thought goes into the outfit selection each and every Sunday morning, and there is always going to be someone in your brunch group that wants to make a photoshoot the post-brunch activity of choice.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of brunching with some fellow NYC interns from Chapel Hill and this Fashionista’s outfit stood out to me as the perfect go-to look for any brunch occasion. It’s simple, trendy, casual, and it’s full of personality. Not to mention the incredible pink restaurant two doors down from our brunch location helped pull the entire look together.

Great job, Peitro Nolito, you sure know how to attract every fashion-forward, millennial Instagrammer in the city.

The button-front denim skirt is a classic choice and can be paired with almost any top. She kept it cool with a plain chiffon, off-white top and then spiced it up with a cool layered necklace that her mother made (added points for originality, of course).

One thing she said to me as we headed toward the subway was that she rushed out the door and didn’t have time to pick cuter socks. I completely disagreed with this statement and think the pure white socks peeking out of the shiny black oxfords add the perfect amount of cute and quirky to this look. Sure, she could’ve found ruffled pink ones to add a pop of color, but the blatant simplicity and boldness of the stark white socks make the look just different enough to stand out from your average denim skirt ensemble.

The final touch to this outfit was the structured yellow vintage purse. Yellow is having a major moment in fashion right now and she used that moment to make this bag shine just as bright as the sun. It completely stood out, as every other color in her look was a neutral tone that could be paired with anything. The purse immediately captures your attention and looked even more fantastic when paired with the adorable Tumblr pink hearts on the door.

So, for your next brunch outing, take notes from this Fashionista and let some personality shine through by making a classic look have the right amount of different elements. One thing that also helps is not limiting the fun Sunday activities to just consuming massive amounts of good food, but go find a pink wall to take some killer photos in front of too.

Smell the Roses Because School Is Ending and Florals Are Trending

Hello fashion lovers of all walks of life! Whether you are strutting the runway, walking through the busy streets of New York, or strolling down your local farmer’s market, this summer’s latest fashion trends will surely accommodate you. I was on the lookout for what’s hot this summer (pun intended), and I found so many different trends! With that said, I was forced to narrow the list.

We can’t talk summer fashion trends without first going over beach attire. One-pieces are owning the poolsides and seashores of summer 2017! These stylish one-pieces I’m talking about are not like our childhood one-pieces we cringed to wear every summer as we yearned for the day that we could finally fill out our very own bikini. No, these one-pieces are surely not cringe worthy, but style worthy! They have a low cut on the side and a high hip cut to show off our bodies natural curves. All the while, it gives just the right amount of coverage; I call this the perfect balance.

Let’s talk colors! This season is about all things bright! I am talking pinks of every shade and yellows of every hue. This season’s colors are truly getting their summer vibes on!

Now onto my favorite part: patterns! This summer, patterns have taken center stage. There are stripes galore, polka dots for days, and florals forever! These looks are going to be the scene just about everywhere you go.

Not all of the fashion trends for summer 2017 are for everyday-wear, but if you are daring, I say go for it! After all, fashion is all about taking risks! One risky trend that stood out to me in particular were robes! Yes, robes are a summer 2017 fashion trend. I am serious guys; it’s all over the runways. Gone is the day that you have to spend hours getting ready just to buy your morning caramel macchiato with coconut milk. Now you can just roll out of bed, throw on your cute robe, and head over to Starbucks before the line gets too long. Now to truly pull this look off you need to dress it up with a statement piece necklace and a cute pair of heels. I did my own rendition of the robe look on my friend by incorporating a few of this season’s trends!

I want you all to give this daring look a shot and show me your rendition of the summer 2017 robe trend on social media! Make sure to tag @Cfashionista on Insta!
