FASHION NEWS: New York Fashion Week 2010

New York Fashion Week is one of the most important weeks for the fashion industry in America, it shows what’s going to be hot for the next season, and it’s a chance for new designers to showcase their talent. Since we’re stuck in the Midwest, you can view all the shows at Style.com.

Prints are popular for spring, with many designers showcasing floral and polka dot prints. DKNY showed bright graffiti-esque floral prints, while Derek Lam had a tropical vacation feel to it, and there were more feminine florals at Cynthia Steffe. There’s black and white polka dots at Reem Acra and Rebecca Taylor; while there were more subtle polka dots at Altuzarra.

TREND: Polka Dots!

Picking the perfect outfit for class can sometimes be difficult. This is too risque for class, that looks like your mom would wear it. I occasionally find myself changing outfits multiple times.

But, take a hint from this Fashionista for a simple, perfect look for class…

She paired a polka dot dress with a black knit vest to create a comfy outfit that says, “I’m studious, but darling too.” The glasses only add to both.

Hint: Remove the vest and you have a great nighttime look! Then pair it with these and if it is cold out, you can never go wrong with a biker jacket to add an edge.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: pretty woman remix

I love the movie Pretty Woman for a variety of reasons. First, the obvious- Julia Roberts is stunning and her talented performance is memorable. But the Fashionista in me loves the movie for the classic 1980’s attire and the outfit changes that Julia takes when wined and dined by the hunky Richard Gere. This College Fashionista looks as if she was plucked directly from the famous scene where Gere takes Roberts to a Cricket game dolled up in a brown polka dot dress. Our Fashionista’s modified red and black ensemble was equally as brilliant. Polka dots are making a comeback on the runway for Spring 2010 and appearing in creative places like accessories and pants.
