This Boot Style Will Make Even The Most Goody-Goody Feel Like a Rebel

Dr. Martens is by far one of the most iconic shoe companies that was ever created. Since the first boot hit the scene in April of 1960, it was a cultural staple through many generations and subcultures. As many of us know, the Dr. Martens boot was the signature item to wear during the punk movement in the 1960s and early 1970s. Since then, the shoe has transcended many different pop culture movements and become the perfect boot for many different styles.

To showcase how Dr. Martens can be styled outside of its typical, classic punk fashion, I teamed up with my best friend and fashion blogger for a modern punk photo shoot with a twist. We both wanted to exhibit our own take on punk while also channeling our black girl magic for a fierce, stylish shoot. We tied together the aesthetic of the punk culture by rocking our favorite pairs of Dr. Martens.

1—The feminine punk. Rekik took on more of a feminine approach to her punk-inspired style. She wore a black slip dress that catered to a more feminine, seductive side of punk and paired it with a black, floral lace cardigan which added a soft touch to her dark look. Sticking true to the punk style, of course, she topped this look off by wearing Floral Pascal Dr. Martens. Her choice of this floral boot polished off the feminine aesthetic that she brought to the punk style, and also added a punch of color to her cool look along with her bright orange mini shoulder bag. To accessorize and complete her look, Rekik wore a dark lip and flaunted silver rings which both stuck to the rock star spirit of punk.

2—The eclectic punk. I took on a more eclectic, abstract approach to the punk style, which is the aesthetic that I am most comfortable with. I had a great time styling this look while staying true to my natural style sense, letting punk elements shine through. I styled myself with a black-and-white abstract printed A-line dress, a cream backpack purse, and the classic black Dr. Martens. The dress was a big statement for this look, which spoke to the erratic nature of the punk culture and music. I also styled my natural hair in a faux mohawk, which was also an iconic style during the punk era. I also sported a black lip and a gold choker that played upon the chokers that were worn during the classic punk era.

No matter what your style is, I believe that there is a little punk in everyone. You can never be a full punk until you love your Dr. Martens as much as we do!

How to Punk Rock for a Wild Summer

New beginnings require new appearances, and that’s exactly why in this article for the new semester of CollegeFashionista I am going to teach you, Style Gurus, how to punk rock. It’s almost summer, finals are almost over, and it’s time to run free and get a little wild.It all started when I decided to dye my hair a different color. I had in mind something crazy, something eye-catching, and something new. My hair turned from the initial purple dye to green/blue with a variety of shades mixed. It reminded me of old school punk hair. This gave me the bad street attitude vibe and so I started working around that. I got some ideas from the movies Ghost World and SLC Punk!, as well as the well-known Ruby Rose green hair, don’t care.

To get the most out of this look, you should put yourself out there. It’s all about loud, wild clothing. It’s almost as if you’re rebelling. One thing is for sure: everyone’s attention will be on your outfit. So, start with your favorite band T-shirt. It can be a crop top, it can have holes in it, it can be worn out and cut in weird shapes such as side cutouts, and more. It’s about achieving the street look.

The rest is pretty easy. Denim shorts, in any color, any cut, and style. I went with white to make the rest of the outfit stand out more. Next up are some fishnet tights. A good twist would be a ripped fishnet. The great thing about this outfit is that you don’t have to make it look great, it’s effortless. Add leather leg suspenders to give you a signature punk look. Studs in any piece of clothing are also welcome. The final touch is the shoes. Make it bulky, make it chunky, and make it stand out. It’s your power tool. Throw on a pair of colorful shades and you’re good to go.

That’s all for now, and remember that besides looking super hot, you’re also going to look super cool and laid-back.

What’s your favorite way to dress in the summer? Let us know in the comments below!

WHAT TO WEAR: A Guy’s Guide to Flawless Fashion

How could someone not take fashion advice from this stylish Fashionisto? This Fashionisto is an optometry major at Ferris State and a true style expert. He gets a lot of his inspiration from his favorite pop punk bands and his biggest idol, Panic! At The Disco’s lead singer, Brendon Urie. He most appreciates summer fashion, and therefore takes interest in west coast fashion. It’s clear that his mixed passions for California fashion and the punk scene make for the perfect sense of style.

This Fashionisto started his outfit with a pair of slim fit black jeans. Black denim is a great choice because it looks more sophisticated than everyday blue denim. Black is classy, but the style is still quite relaxed. Like this Fashionisto, you can dress up a pair of more formal looking black skinny jeans with the right shirt. You can do anything with them and they’ll never go out of style.

The most eye-catching piece of this outfit was the fitted floral button-down. Being the only colored article, the eye is naturally drawn to the tiny white flowers against the solid navy blue background. The pattern sticks out more than the solid black statements: his hair, pants, and shoes. This Fashionisto says his shirt was his favorite part of his outfit because it was comfortable and perfect for the sunny weather that day.

The black and white trend flows from his black hair all the way down to a true punk piece, his black and white pair of Vans Sk8-His. Vans is based out of southern California and highly appeals to the punk scene. The brand sponsors the Vans Warped Tour every summer, a nation wide music tour featuring pop punk, punk, and screamo bands. “Summer is my favorite season so I’m excited for everything it entails, including Vans Warped Tour!” This Fashionisto said. “It’ll be interesting seeing a lot of bands I’m not too familiar with, but that’s the fun part.” He is looking forward to picking his outfit for the tour and gaining new inspiration and fashion ideas from other creative punk styles at the show.

Accessories are essential to completing an outfit. One of his favorite accessories is his silver wrist watch. The watch was a Christmas gift from his grandmother. Accessorizing with a wristwatch adds a sense of class to any outfit. In addition to being convenient, it implies simplicity and signifies style. Guys must be careful about over accessorizing. However, adding the most versatile of all accessories, sunglasses, is a great way to turn a tool for shading your eyes into a trendy fashion statement. This Fashionisto wore his black and gold framed sunglasses to match the colors throughout the rest of his outfit. When they’re not covering his eyes they can sit on his head or dangle from his neckline and still look just as fashionable.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Time For Some Fun

Some people take fashion way too seriously. But what’s the fun in that? There is none. There is absolutely no reason to live in a world with no fun. With spring around the corner, and the snow (hopefully) going away, there is no reason not to be happy. To me, the best time of the year is when sweaters are packed up and shorts are brought out. There is something inspiring about starting with a new season. I see it as an opportunity to change and improve myself and my outfits.

Although many people think spring is a time for pastels, I do not. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a nice salmon pink pant, but it is just personally not for me. So, this month I decided to prove that dark colors can work in warm weather and you still can have fun while doing so. In order to prove this, I found this Fashionista sporting a lace-up oversize rocker T-shirt, Converse sneakers, and fun patterned socks. The smiley face socks made me laugh and also reminded me of the fun of fashion. Paired with the rocker T-shirt, it was the perfect match of fun yet also a little bit edgy—which is also trending this spring. The print on the socks has also been seen as decals on jeans, which creates the fun but edgy effect that everyone seems to just eat up. The black Converse brought a mix of fun yet casual, while also matching the black T-shirt.

I am hoping that this spring I will be able to have more fun in fashion, starting with just a smile.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Sweat the Small Stuff

“Fashions change, but style endures,” is a quote by Coco Chanel that is, embarrassingly enough, hanging in my room. It hangs there because it is such a good reminder for me to embrace and experiment with my personal style. The most common way I change up my style is through the beauty of accessorizing. I always notice this Fashionista in our Friday class, and how she always adds a few extra touches to her look. For this outfit, she pairs a ripped plunge crop with high-waisted mom jeans and black Doc Martens. Her style gave me an inside look at who she was before actually getting to know her, which is what I love about fashion.

My favorite part of this outfit were the accessories—they can make anything you throw on look like you have your life together. Her ear piercings were super colorful and cute, and the stone on the choker was very unique and attention-grabbing. But my favorite element by far were the hair jewels, and I kept telling her over and over how obsessed I was with them. These would be perfect for a re-vamp for your personal style in the spring and upcoming summer! Accessories like these are super easy to throw on and can transform any outfit for different occasions. “Don’t sweat the small stuff” is normally said as a calming expression, but I feel like, in this case, the “small stuff” can actually make choosing an outfit a lot easier. So, technically, you won’t be sweating!

STYLE ADVICE: Catch the Tail of Winter

Entering March, the temperature on the East Coast is gradually rising. You can finally put on those spring clothes that you have stored in your closet for the whole winter. However, it might be too early to abandon those nice winter wardrobes since the air is still chilly. So get ready to receive some advice on how to create early spring street style!

It was about 49 degrees here in Boston while the wind was still rustling, when this Fashionisto, an advertising student at Boston University, caught my eye with his all-black look. The Fashionisto wisely matched his winter coat and boots with a lightweight pullover shirt which helped him keep warm and stylish at the same time. The black cashmere coat perfectly matched the early spring vibe, while hammered studs on the boots and black and white smiling faces on the bag gave the look a punkish attitude.

One thing special with his look was that his overall styling was low-key and harmonious but remained unique with the details. The Fashionisto’s uniquely designed pullover shirt was ornamented with white tassels which is a key highlight to the all-black look. In early spring, we don’t want our outfits to be dull and plain, but it would be too much to put on some heavily-designed statement pieces. We can see from this Fashionisto that some interesting details are enough to level up the entire look.

Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare for your early spring look. Go find some interesting small ornament pieces at the vintage market or DIY your own!

STYLE GURU STYLE: In the ’90s

“Drop it low like it did in the ’90s.”

I, as well as many people around the world, have been recently inspired to bring back all the ’90s fashion. From scrunchies to grunge looks and jean jackets, the ’90s are having a big comeback in the 21st century. And I am all for it. (Obviously!)

This outfit encompasses everything I have seen trending in recent months: jean jackets, converse, cut-up shirts, and braids.

Finding the right jacket for me can be extremely difficult. I have very broad, athletic shoulders so I typically have to size up in jackets and coats. It can be quite tricky. The arms will fit but the body of the coat is too big or vice versa. I can’t have my arms suffocating. With jean jackets back in style, it adds texture and a bit of spunk to your look. Especially if you have a black one like mine. I picked mine up here in Greece from a popular store called Pull and Bear. I’m all for the color black as it can go with everything. Jean jackets serve as an extra accessory that you can chuck on for warmth or wrap it around your waist for flare.

The color of freshly opened white Converse shoes may literally be the best thing ever. They are blinding. You don’t want to put them on because you don’t want to get them dirty or ruin them. I usually have that mentality until I muster up the courage to take them outside one day. Now, I am realizing what may be considered “dirty” Converse, really have a deeper meaning than what is on the outside. I look down at my shoes and see all the memories I have walked through. I see the pink spots from an extremely fun New Years Eve party, the stains from walking up the Acropolis to the Parthenon or the dirt from when I explored with my best friend. Why would you want to wash that away? It adds character in which I think every one needs to incorporate into their style.

I personally like the look of cut up T-shirts, only when you have created them yourself! It means your shirt is unique and no one else can steal it. Top it off with one of your favorite band logos on it. You’ll be surely to wear it over and over again.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Punk Isn’t Dead

Denim jackets are now back in style and can be purchased everywhere from H&M to Target, but those who follow punk fashion have been rocking this look forever. This Fashionisto chose to pair his Levi’s jacket with a matching pair of black Levi’s jeans for that denim on denim look. A vintage hardcore band T-shirt from the ’80s peeks out from underneath the jacket and fits perfectly with his vibe. This Fashionisto says that most of his wardrobe consists of band shirts, which makes sense because they are definitely a must-have in anyone’s closet and they are an easy and comfortable choice.

This Fashionisto makes his outfit unique with the accessories that he chose. Starting from the top, his style shines even through his choice of frames. He is wearing a pair of clear framed Warby Parker glasses that make him stand out from the crowd of usual black framed glasses. Next, he pins some buttons on his jacket that he got to support a local band and his friend’s digital zine. Not only are these buttons much more interesting than having nothing on his jacket, they show that he supports things that are important to him. Finally, this Fashionisto’s final touch to his outfit is a pair of worn in Doc Marten boots. These shoes have become very trendy in recent years but are a must have staple for any person that admires punk fashion.

The best part about this Fashionisto’s outfit is that it is completely unisex—any Fashionista that feels inspired by his outfit can rock the same look! All you need is a pair of jeans, a denim jacket, a band T-shirt, and a pair of boots. This look will definitely make you stand out from the everyday campus trends. Don’t forget to add your own details to make this outfit special.

WHAT TO WEAR: Rocker Chic

Walking around campus at WSU is usually just a sea of students in puffy coats and huge snow boots. I am usually one of those students as well. That is why it is super easy to spot out a Fashionista.

This Fashionista is rocking her outfit from head to toe, as I was able to spot out her pink hair right away. The bandana is the new trend and can be seen in this Fashionista’s hair. Wearing a bandana on your head, neck, or wrist will add immediate grunge to your look and is an easy accessory. A graphic T-shirt is always my favorite addition; they are so comfortable but add so much to any outfit. This outfit is so awesome because of the great layering techniques this Fashionista used. The long brown sweater under a nice, black, cargo, winter coat gives layers and warmth to the Fashionista.  Layers can make a boring outfit into a great one. Ripped jeans are always a plus and are clearly very in style right now. My favorite part of this outfit is the military boots. Military boots have come and go, but these boots have a ’90s feel to the outfit. The boots look vintage and tie the whole rocker look back together.

Keeping warm can be hard, but if you continue to layer up and take advantage of the boot season, you will be good to go. Mix black with your bright colors, and when in doubt wear a bandana! Do not be afraid to dress up in this down weather.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Welcome Back to the ’90s.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the hipsters in your neighborhood, grunge is in. Chokers, chunky Doc Martens, biker jackets, and jellies are providing everyone with a major flashback. Today, we’re throwing it back to the ’90s with this grunge rock look.

I was in Over The Rhine in Cincinnati when I found this stylish Fashionista out with friends. OTR is definitely the perfect place to let your inner hipster out and join in on all the latest and greatest trends being brought back.

This Fashionista knew exactly what to do with the details of her outfit but kept it simple at the same time. The distressed jeans really brought attention to her black chunky booties, which everyone needs to have a pair of. The thing that most caught my eye of this Fashionista is the gold necklace hanging low to her black lacey bra underneath her sheer black top. Sheer tops are a great opportunity to turn up the accessories. You can go over or under with different accessories just like this Fashionista did.

The look this Fashionista put together would work for day and night. The pink shades matching her hair pull it all together for that afternoon outing. Leaving the shades and adding some lipstick changes it into a perfect night out look.

It is so easy to change a look or just step it up by a little extra effort with the details. You may not think people notice, but it definitely goes a long way.
