5 Podcasts for the Fashion Obsessed

Living in such a fast-paced, visual world can have its ups and downs. Instagram and other social media provide us all with a powerful creative outlet, but sometimes you just need to close your eyes and give your fingers a break from scrolling. That’s where podcasts come in. However old-school they may seem, podcasts are definitely making a comeback. And for good reason. Both informative and entertaining, podcasts really get your imagination working, in a way that Netflix just can’t.

Staying up to date with fashion can be like a full-time job. Between flipping through magazines, scrolling through Instagram, and reading blog posts, keeping up with trends can be tough. Fashion podcasts are one of my favorite ways to stay on top of industry news.

Whether you’re working out, chilling in pajamas, or commuting to your summer internship, podcasts are the best way to pass time. Below are my top five fashion podcasts. So, grab your headphones and enjoy.

1—Fashion No Filter. If you don’t follow Camille Charrière and Monica Ainley on Instagram, your feed is seriously lacking in style inspiration. The two fashion girls talk everything fashion, from trends and shows to industry issues and clichés. Guests so far have included the likes of designer Roksanda Ilincic and Caroline Vreeland. Subscribe ASAP for your fashion fix.

2—Vogue. Over the past 25 years, André Leon Talley has worked for major publications such as Interview, W and of course, Vogue. Check out this podcast to hear the bubbly Fashionisto’s exclusive interviews with Anna Wintour, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and more.

3—The High Low. Pandora Sykes and Dolly Alderton cohost this cheery podcast, which is a little less fashion and a little more pop-culture, but fabulous nonetheless. Their very British sense of humor makes for a seriously entertaining listen.

4—Monocycle. The epitome of a blogging success story, Man Repeller has grown from a small fashion blog into a successful business, with a shoe line for Net-a-Porter to boot (see what I did there). Listen to Monocycle for an insight into Leandra Medine’s quirky yet genius mind, where she discusses everything from fertility to fashion week.

5—Office Hours with College Fashionista. No podcast recommendations would be complete without mentioning Office Hours with College Fashionista, which invites incredible guests to discuss their careers and offer valuable advice. Such amazing guests have included none other than Elaine Welteroth, the Editor-in-Chief of Teen Vogue, Riverdale stars Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart, and Victoria’s Secret model Grace Elizabeth. I can’t wait to see who else they have lined up!

A Mid-Chilly Summer Night’s Dream

With the summer upon us, don’t put away your jackets just yet! This Fashionista shows you how to ride the cloudy days with her street chic style.

My Zara jacket fends off a cold hour but is thin enough to keep on when the sun comes out. Most of my summery jackets are loosely fit, enabling me to layer underneath but stay breezy. Throughout the classic camouflage design are triangular studs on burgundy patchwork, giving it a modern taste.

Statement necklaces are my favorite fashion accessory. They can transform any look and are a wardrobe must-have. A trend is to contrast them with toned-down or business shirts. Here, I paired my Bebe choker-esque piece with a relaxed white V-neck for a touch of glam. Since I have a jacket on, I wear a short-sleeved oversize top.

Another piece you may be tempted to shy from are jeans in favor of miniskirts or dolphin shorts. With the right type, the popular style are perfect year-round. Pick low-rise jeans with distressed tears to let your skin breathe. Closed floral Nike sneakers celebrate the summer but keep the rain out. Pair thin ankle socks with running shoes for lightweight flexibility. Absorbent fabrics are crucial to keep in mind. Therefore, when shopping consider chambray, linen, and cotton.

Any fellow bag lady knows the importance of a multi-use piece! Carrying all my must haves requires a medium-sized bag. To alleviate weight and keep it off my body, I hold the satchel with my hands or activate its thick shoulder straps. Furthermore, faux leather paired with a draped style give it a slick feel and ode to harsher winter months. Also, on the bottom there are metal studs to protect the exterior from wear and tear. More purses need to have these for the sake of financial value and avoiding dreaded puddles.

5 Tips for Your Rainy Day Wardrobe

Summer has a way of inspiring the fashion soul—so when rainy days are abound during the season, I know I often find myself uninspired and discouraged when it comes to expressing myself. I know my hair will just get frizzy and my jeans will get wet, so I would rather just toss my hair into a bun and throw on some ratty sweatpants than stay true to my personal style. My friend and I frequent the local bagel shop in our town, and on this very rainy day, she showed me the spirit of a true Fashionista, representing herself through her style despite the discouraging weather. Drawing from her look as inspiration, I have compiled five tips for your rainy day wardrobe to inspire myself and other Fashionistas to stay true to our summer style, even when the weather may not!

1. Get creative with your coat—We all know that jackets are essential in the rain—there is no way your meticulously planned outfit is getting soaked. But instead of choosing your usual bright yellow rain jacket, try something out of the box like this Fashionista did here! She is wearing a blue and green plaid blazer; not only does this extra layer keep her dry, but it makes her look unique and interesting as well.

2. Cool your heels—While it may be easy to reach for your clunky galoshes or knee-high rain boots, do not be afraid of using your shoes as a statement piece on a gloomy day. This Fashionista opted for purple thigh-high suede boots, and provided you will not be spending all day outside in the rain, a bold look like this is perfect for brightening up a rainy day.

3. Boldly go where no accessory has gone before—Just because the rain dulls the sparkle does not mean you should, too. Do not be afraid to accessorize a little extra to makeup for the gloomy weather—you can try out a simple gold necklace, or even some bold gold hoop earrings. You will be sure to shine even when the sun is not.

4. Utilize that setting spray—Fear of rain misting your face should not deter you from creating a unique makeup look on a cloudy day. You can create a smoky eye using gold-toned eyeshadow, and make the look pop with a bold red lip. Then apply some setting spray, and trust in the makeup gods that your look survives the run from the car to the indoors.

5. Summer-ize your pieces—Because the outdoors may not be giving off particularly summer-y vibes on a rainy day, it is now up to you to let everyone know what season it is. Choose a floral print, (I know, I know…florals? For summer? Groundbreaking.) to cheer up an otherwise dull day. You can wear a dress, too, rather than pants. Not only will you feel free, but you will remind everyone of the cheerful season it really is!

Whether you employ all of these tips, or only one, your rainy days will surely be more inspired and bright than if you just opt for sweatpants and rain boots!

WHAT TO WEAR: We Want Summer

We made it, Fashionistas! Schools out for the summer, but it still feels like early spring. It’s been cold, rainy, and fifty shades of gray. I find that this weather is the most difficult to dress for because all I really want to do is put on some pajamas and curl up in my bed.

To combat this dreary summer weather, I have decided that I will be the one to add a little bit of color into my otherwise gray days. I don’t normally wear a lot of color, so this was a bit daunting for me. However, this awesome sweater made it much easier for me to incorporate a lot of color into my outfit. This Wildfox sweater also says “relax” on it, which is what I plan to do from now through September. This sweater inspired me to go bold, so I added another pop of color with this thick blue choker. The small blue bag I added also keeps the outfit cohesive. On the bottom, I thought best to keep it simple with a black skirt and black platform sandals.

This outfit allowed me to really have fun with my style in spite of the terrible weather. Colors completely affect my mood, so it is important to keep things bright if I want to stay positive on gray days. I’m sure that many of you are similar to me and only like wearing shades of black and white. Try adding some pops of color to your outfit with shoes, jewelry, or a statement piece of clothing; you’ll be surprised how much of an affect it can have on your mood.

WHAT TO WEAR: Rain Rain Go Away

Is anyone else over mother nature’s mood swings? In one day the weather will go from raining to sunny and freezing to hot. It’s a miracle I can get myself dressed everyday without actually knowing what the weather is going to be like.

This Fashionista is tackling the crazy weather perfectly. On a rainy day the footwear of choice is a super cute pair of rain boots. I love the height of these boots because I find that knee length rain boots are a little hard to walk in. However, these calf high boots are perfect for getting around campus quickly on a rainy day. This Fashionista is bridging the gap between winter and spring by pairing a lightweight turtleneck with a denim button-up skirt. I’m all about doubling up on seasons with some of my clothing items. If I love something enough, I can find a way to wear it 365 days a year. To combat the rain, an adorable rain jacket is a must. I’m guilty of trying to get though life without a rain jacket, and I want to take this moment to let everyone to learn from my mistakes. Nothing is worse than going to class or a meeting slightly damp because you thought it wasn’t raining that hard. Follow in the footsteps of this Fashionista and invest in a neutral rain jacket that you can pair with anything. You’ll be fashionable, but more importantly, you’ll be dry. To finish off her outfit, this Fashionista added a simple pearl necklace. Pearls are classy, timeless, and add a little extra oomph to any outfit you’re wearing.

Hopefully this provided you with a little inspiration for the next day that mother nature is in one of those moods, and you have no idea what the weather is going to be like. Here’s to warmer, sunnier, and dryer days ahead!

STYLE ADVICE: It’s About Your Happiness

Are you happy with the way you look? Does that outfit have you feeling yourself? If the answer is yes, then it does not matter what others think. My only advice is that if something makes you happy, then do it. Whether we like to admit it or not, we all care to some extent what others think about us. What we need to do is strive towards not caring so much. Wear that shirt, wear those shoes, and wear whatever you want!

Regardless of the rain and it ruining her hair, this Fashionista was happy and felt good with what she was wearing. It is a very simple outfit with nothing much to it. She caught my eye, not necessarily by the uniqueness of her outfit but by the way she carried herself. Sometimes it does not necessarily matter what clothes one is wearing, but the attitude one wears because this Fashionista wore confidence.

Her outfit consisted of a simple striped top with an army green button-down and dark jeans. Due to the rain, she wore her magenta Hunter rain boots. To accessorize, she wore a super cute gold bar necklace along with a gold watch and a couple of Alex and Ani bangles.

Take my advice, strive to make yourself happy and not others. We sometimes tend to put effort in certain things that we later realize do not matter. We are not here for as long as we think. Wear whatever you feel good in and most importantly learn to wear confidence all the time.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Muggy Monday

Unfortunately, in Oklahoma, our spring weather has consisted of constant rain and constant sneezing for me. However, that couldn’t stop me from finding the perfect inspiration from a fellow Fashionista for a casual, muggy day look. In my eyes, what makes a casual outfit look put together and cute is all in the details. This outfit consists of a T-shirt, leggings, and sneakers. However, these items are nowhere near simple or basic. Each item has a decorative element that makes what could be a simple and basic item become something unique and fashion forward.

As we all know, athleisure is a hot topic in all realms of fashion, but this outfit was created to mix in some edgy details to set it apart from the basic Adidas athleisure look. The T-shirt has an edgy design and the leggings have a moto design that emphasizes a more grunge look. The sneakers are light gray Vans but with a twist. These Vans have the classic look of Vans, but they used a snake skin print made with suede fabric. This detailed print makes the shoes stand out from any other kind of sneaker.

Without a doubt, any outfit can use the addition of accessories! This Fashionista paired her outfit with some simple jewelry and a black and white swell bottle to stay hydrated and fashionable. I don’t know about you guys, but during the school year I usually wear more casual looks so I can always use some inspiration on new and unique ways to create a comfortable, yet trendy, ensemble. I hope you enjoyed getting some inspiration from this outfit as much as I did!

BEAUTY BAR: April Showers

It’s true what they say, April showers bring May flowers. It seems like the whole month of April consists of monsoons and down pours, but that doesn’t mean you have to ditch all of your favorite styles and beauty looks. Grab your umbrella, throw on some rain boots, and head out the door looking fabulous.

As this Fashionista anticipates summer, she dressed up a simple pair of jeans and made them into a casual, yet dressy, outfit. She styled a nice off-the-shoulder, ruffled top and added a statement necklace for her own little touch. This Fashionista beat the rain by adding a pair of Hunter rain boots. It is so important for every college student to invest in a good pair of rain boots. Not only are they a lifesaver when you have to walk across campus in the pouring rain, but they are also come in a variety of fun colors–and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like jumping in the occasional puddle? Add rain boots to any outfit for the perfect rainy day look.

To complete her outfit, this Fashionista chose to stick to her glowy, everyday makeup routine. Her nude, matte lip gives the look the perfect touch. A natural beauty look works great for any occasion. If you decide you’re feeling brave, you can easily add a bold lip color to add a little variation.

Don’t let the rain keep you curled up in bed, binge watching your favorite Netflix series. Always be one step ahead of mother nature by keeping your favorite rain boots close. April showers don’t always have to put a damper on your plans.

WHAT TO WEAR: Spring Showers

It’s spring time again, and with the warmer weather comes unpredictable storms. Doing your best to prepare for these upcoming storms are your best bet for arriving wherever you need to go looking the same as when you left home.

If you have a car, I always recommend to have some emergency items tucked away. An umbrella, a spare shirt or sweater, and some old pants you were planning on throwing away are great to have. If you don’t have a car or prefer to walk or take public transportation, make sure you check your favorite weather app before you walk out the door. A small umbrella that you can throw into your purse will be become your best friend.

For rainy days, most would want to just hideaway from the weather and stay cuddled up in bed with a good book. But most of the time we don’t have much of a say when we have to go to work or class, and bad weather, unless drastic, isn’t the best excuse. If you must leave your house, sweats and hoodies are most people’s go-to clothes. However, don’t be afraid to dress it up on rainy days!

As her outfit shows, this Fashionista isn’t afraid to brace the weather. She’s wearing a multicolored striped T-shirt dress and added a braided black belt around her waist to add to her look. She paired her outfit with some black open-toed heels. The trick with heels and rainy weather is to find some that are comfortable and have a bigger heel, so they’re more stable and that have a bottom with more grip. A rain jacket or a coat that’s waterproof are definite must-haves. Or, of course, having a giant stylish umbrella like this Fashionista has, is a good replacement for a warmer day, and it seems to add to the outfit rather than take away. She also paired the look with a black tote bag that has durable material to keep everything inside perfectly dry.

So take some inspiration from this Fashionista, and next time it rains, don’t be afraid to continue to be the most stylish you.

WHAT TO WEAR: Don’t Let the Gloom Drag You Down

April showers. Anyone who lives in the northeast knows that this phrase holds much truth.

Drip, drip, drop. A streak of wetness slides down your cheeks. You just got your mid-terms back, you haven’t figured out what you are doing over the summer, you processed the extra weight you gained during the holidays, and your relationships are falling apart, but you are pretty sure you are not crying—at least, not yet. Then, you look up and curse to yourself. “You have got to be kidding me.” Yes, it is raining again, and no, you didn’t bring an umbrella. Now, you panic about your hair frizzing up, make-up running down, and clothes permanently ruined. “Why can’t you at least let me keep the last bit of my dignity?”

Rain is important for keeping the earth alive, but as anthropocentric individuals it is very hard to appreciate mother nature when your life seems to be falling apart. For fashion lovers, constant rain also discourages you from putting yourself together nicely because the wearing-out process is expedited. I saw this Fashionista on one of those sad, raining days. However, she did not let the gloom drag her down. She makes a bold statement with her magenta tights, which matches with the little hearts on her boot. Then, she sneakily adds the light cyan color to her outfit by her socks and fur pom-pom sweater. I think there is nothing more rebellious than wearing fur on a raining day. In order to not detract from her colorful pieces, the Fashionista made sure to keep the rest of her outfit monochrome.

The highlight of her outfit is the transparent rain jacket. It is good to have the confidence to dress how you like on a rainy day, but it is even better to to dress how you like and not have your outfit ruined. Aside from revealing her outfit, the jacket’s transparency also makes sure that her curves are not lost. The black outlines of her jacket creates dimensions and structure in her color-block pieces.

This Fashionista reminds us not to let a bad weather stop us from looking fabulous. Let the rain cry for you. Don’t let the rain make you cry.
