4 Tips for Looking Fab in a Heat Wave

When the first major heat wave of the year hits, getting dressed in the morning can feel like a drag. All I want to do is kick my feet up on the couch and enjoy the air conditioning with a lemonade in my hand. Sometimes, putting together a fashionable look can be the last thing I feel like doing. This Fashionista gave her top four tips on how she developed her go to summer look for the hot weather.

1—Find a staple dress and wear it whenever you can! Having a piece that can be dressed up or down is key in a summer wardrobe. This Fashionista came across this gorgeous dress from For Love and Lemons and finds herself styling it many different ways. She loves the way it makes her feel confident while also staying cool.

2—Add a pair of clogs for some height! When you find a pair of shoes that speak to you and it can change your entire mood for the day. This Fashionista discovered these gems at Free People and finds herself wearing them all the time. She loves the height it gives her while still being comfortable enough to walk around the city!

3—Top the outfit off with a simple handbag! This Fashionista added a vintage coach bag she found at the Fairfax Flea Market in Fairfax, Ca. This bag is one of a kind and really adds a nice touch to the outfit. An item with a story always makes for a great conversation starter!

4—Keep the jewelry elegant yet simple. Sticking to some simple and refined gold jewelry can give your look the extra sparkle it needs! This Fashionista found some gorgeous rings at Free People that have become a staple in her everyday wardrobe.

4 Tips for Your Next Brunch Outing

Look no further for the trendy teens and 20-somethings—they’re inside cozy coffee shops and quirky restaurants enjoying brunch, and for good reason. Who could pass up delicious coffee, an array of tasty pastries, and the general homey atmosphere?

With so many restaurant and café options and so little time, it can be tempting to just make a list of places to go and breeze through them. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to differentiate from one place from the next. We live in a world that is so fast-paced and crazy that a laid-back brunch with friends is a gift we should savor and enjoy. From downloading a few apps to trying a new dish, here are a few of my tips for making the most out of your next brunch outing.

1—Plan ahead with interactive apps. There are dozens of apps to help you find the hip new places and interesting dishes you’re looking for. Some of my favorites are Ness, Off The Menu, and Localeur. Ness combines data from your past dining preferences and chatter about up-and-coming places on Twitter, Facebook, etc., and gives you personalized restaurant recommendations. Off The Menu lists secret menu items sold at cafés, bars, and restaurants across the U.S. Localeur compiles thousands of recommendations from locals on places to dine, shop, and experience when you’re visiting a new city. By planning ahead with these apps, you’ll spend less time deciding where to go and poring over the menu and more time talking with your friends!

2—Pick your outfit the night before. Most likely you’ll be taking pictures with your friends, so plan your outfit ahead of time so you’re not stressed in the morning. Wear something cute, but comfortable so you can enjoy your time out and not worry about a skirt riding up or a top not staying in place. This Fashionista shows us one of her favorite trends for the summer: a striped off-the-shoulder top with fun sleeves. She is also wearing a pendant necklace and several rings to accessorize her outfit.

3—Take in the restaurant aesthetic. The vibe or ambiance of the location also helps separate one dining spot from the next. Some are cozy and homey, some are modern and sleek. So, next time you go out for brunch, try to take in the small details: the decorations and paintings, the cute mugs and bowls, the music, the lighting, and so on. Taking in the smaller details helps create a more relaxed and memorable experience.

4—Try a new beverage or dish. We all have our tried-and-true dish that we get wherever we go, but part of going to a new place is about experiencing what makes it unique. Look up the restaurant’s signature dishes ahead of time or ask the waiter to bring you the special of the day. Who knows? That new dish could become your next go-to when you go out.

Samantha Limon

What’s up, fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos? I am Samantha Limon (yes, that is Lemon in Spanish), a little freshman at Cal State San Bernardino who is currently studying psychology. I know, I know, what am I doing here with all these fashion and business majors? I just have a love for finding clothes and making the outfits my own. Although I don’t dream of being big in the fashion industry, I find my love for fashion always making its way into my life. I was taught growing up that how you present yourself is important, and with a mother who was a Fashionista in her own right, dressing to impress had become ingrained in my life. I cannot wait to begin this amazing internship as a Style Guru!

Let me tell you a little more about myself—I grew up in California. My relationship with living here is up and down just like the weather. Being in California has taught me to love and appreciate both the beautiful outdoors and the exciting rush of city life. Trips to the beach, mountains, and LA are some of my favorite things; breathing in the fresh open air after a beautiful hike, or having that exhilarating feeling that the streets of LA offer is something I can never turn down.

I have always been involved in something, whether it was sports, clubs, or a job. When I came to college, I had to get myself involved in something, and what better way than to join a sorority? I recruited with Kappa Delta and I am so thankful for it. KD has made my college experience just so amazing and exciting thus far, and offered so many opportunities…including discovering what CollegeFashionista is (shoutout to Mary!). I love music and I am what I might call a “concert junkie”…where my wallet weakness lies (…and with food of course). I listen to almost everything depending on my music mood, and my fashion seems to mold to that, which is something I really like about myself. I don’t tend to just stick to the latest fashion trends, and I always throw in my own twist!

Summer weather is slowly inching its way in to California, and that gave me the perfect opportunity to break out my new favorite sundress.

Backless is in, and when this adorable backless dress (pictured) was on those thrift store racks it was an “I-got-to-have-you” moment. Sundresses can never take a wrong turn when paired with a pair of wooden wedges, must-haves in every Fashionista’s closet. I gave this outfit my own little flare by adding a cute copper bracelet, mustard yellow ring, and a Bohemian-style ring on my thumb. To top this look off, I threw in a tan sun hat, because, after all, what yells out “summer is here” better than an adorable floppy hat?

I’m beyond excited to share some #RAD outfits with you all, and begin this amazing journey as a Style Guru. I want people to know that being unique is amazing, and to never be afraid to wear what you love!

Just keep struttin,’ and feel free to drop some of your own summer sundress-ing tips in the comments below!

STYLE GURU STYLE: Dare To Day Party

The best time of the year is upon us as many would say. A time of warm weather, cute clothes, and endless backyard shenanigans. Many use this transition from the cold as a reason to change up their style. Warmer weather is a perfect excuse to get dolled up and make some new friends because lets be honest, who does not love a day party and everything it has to offer?

From one college cutie to the next do not be afraid to use a day party as an excuse to be daring. Try out those adorable new overalls that have just been hanging in your closet or spice things up with a simple sun dress loaded with the best accessories.

Above all else remember to make sure that you keep your clothing to a solid comfort level or how else will you be able to focus on the cutie playing frisbee?

If you are feeling a little sporty grab a jersey and get going. Nothing is more common on college campuses than to see jerseys of all teams and players so why should you not join in on the fun. They are perfect for being paired with sneakers and high knee socks.

Nothing quite screams you’re ready to party than the perfect pair of sunglasses, so make sure you include all your must have items, strut your stuff and be sure to turn a few heads in the process.

From corn hole to capture the flag no one is ever really sure what a day party will consist of. That is why sticking to cute and comfy is the right way to go. With sandals and flats coming out of the woodworks to regain their number one spot on everybody’s feet be sure to paint those little piggies as an extra little pop of color.

BEAUTY BAR: Light and Loose

This Fashionista’s embroidered denim jacket was snagged directly from her mother’s closet, helping her to craft a unique look straight from the vault.

Her natural waves sit right beneath her shoulders, confirming her laid-back style and loose aura. With her brownish-red tinted hair, dark eyebrows, and natural lip color, her features are showcased in the most raw way possible.

The denim jacket, with colorful flowers embroidered on it, provides a genuinely vintage look, as she recalls her mother buying it from Chico’s in the 1990s. Each flower is embellished with tiny rhinestones, artfully redefining the vintage trend with a genuine piece from a floor set released two decades prior.

The silver rings on both of her hands further identify her ability to incorporate unique pieces into her everyday looks. Including a dainty miniature bent teaspoon wrapped around her middle finger and a brown stone accentuating her pointer, this Fashionista’s artful hands hold the seams of both creativity and innovation among today’s most popular trends.

With a genuine vintage piece and her light makeup look, this Fashionista nails a beauty look that truly defines her personal style and personality. Intricately designed and put together, layer by layer, she redefines both ’90s fashion and constant trend cycling with her own personal flair.

Her American Apparel jeans are cuffed at her ankle, showcasing her black booties. Draped over them sits a black, long sleeve mock neck dress, further defining her light and loose look. She layers these garments expertly, confirming both her laid-back persona and personal style.

This Fashionista nails a cool and classic look with both her natural beauty and her raw denim garments. With every detail, her personal style defines unique craft and trend redefining in the coolest way possible.

Stay RAD as usual. Catch you guys when it gets warmer out!

STYLE ADVICE: Strutting Around Downtown

It’s my favorite season of the year, it’s finally spring Fashionistas! That means the sun and flowers will be popping up, and before you know it, summer will be here. Although spring is great, it can be difficult to dress for the weather at times. Walking to your first class in the morning can be really chilly and then can get very hot into the afternoon. This past weekend, I traveled to New York City for a weekend getaway with this Fashionista. Dressing to walk around the city all day and in the springtime means you have to be prepared for anything.

This Fashionista wore the perfect outfit to stroll around the city in spring. She has on a black Adidas crop top with a flannel tied around her waist if she gets cold. This is a great idea because a flannel is super cute and lightweight enough that if it’s windy, she can put it on or leave it tied around her waist for a comfy look. I also love her light wash jeans with the holes in the knee because they’re breathable and so trendy right now. She paired this look with light blue and white sneakers which was so necessary because shopping all day on your feet in uncomfortable shoes can be a nightmare. Then, to match her shoes she added the blue round sunglasses. My favorite pieces she added are her several unique rings and bracelets. To finish her outfit, she added a tiny sun necklace. This Fashionista nailed this look and was so cute and comfortable all day.

STYLE GURU STYLE: Post Spring Break Blues

As we all return from our nice, warm spring breaks and go back to our mundane lives, we’re forced to face the rest of the semester. What we shouldn’t be forced to do is return to our boring winter wardrobes. In Akron, the weather is starting to heat up and so are the outfits seen around campus. A classic piece that is a returning staple every season are stripes, and there is nothing I love more than a fun twist on a classic.

I’ve recently fallen in love with this bold striped dress when I went on vacation. I picked up this hot little number in Charleston, South Carolina, and have been wearing it ever since. This dress makes a bold statement with its orange and blue vertical stripes. It screams vacation but is simple enough to be brought back and integrated into your everyday wardrobe.

This dress is very playful so I kept my accessories earthy.  Of course, I’m still on the choker trend and love this thick chained one. I love the way that the heaviness of the choker plays off the bright and playful dress. Since the dress has a lot of color to it, I stuck with a white bag to coincide with every color in the dress. I didn’t want to do a statement bag so that I could keep attention on the dress. Instead of wearing any bracelets, I layered this look with a ton of different rings. Some chunky and others small, I wanted to keep up with the contrasting look of my jewelry. Something else that I love about this dress is the ability to dress it up or dress it down. If I were looking to wear this to run a few errands, I would just slide on some loafers or sandals. To dress it up, I went with a casual pair of sandals with a small heel that would be comfortable in for the entire night out. Now all I need is a little lipstick and my sunglasses, and I can hit the town.

STYLE ADVICE: Vintage Rocker

In today’s society the social norm has shifted to create a growing popularity for a unique individualized fashion sense, as opposed to a “black and white” outlook of what is considered in style and out. Today, it is considered trendy to thrift your wardrobe and personalize your look. This can make constructing your style a lot more fun! Whether you are dressing up or dressing down, there are plenty subtle tricks to express your unique style.

This Fashionista added some magic to her outfit by mixing the prints of her striped top with her cheetah/denim reversible coat. When you have two risky coinciding looks, it is a good idea to balance your look with a strong yet simple piece. As you can see, the black overlaid dress played this role by perfectly unifying the coat and top. As for the jewelry used for this look, this Fashionista pulled off a tricky technique. It’s easy to make the mistake of overdosing on rings and accessories. However, the plethora of rings used by this stylish student added a cool rock-star vibe. This is a look that can only be pulled off with very simple rings that have a unifying factor, such as the silver makeup and circular theme. Pins are another new trend we are seeing more of everyday. Not only does adding pins and buttons give your look a burst of color, it will add detail to whatever outfit you are sporting. Pins also allow you to show your support for social issues you hold dear, as we see this Fashionista doing! Finally, this look is finished off with some classic little booties, which ties this look together and gives our cute crusader a classy and individualized vibe.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Ring Bling

It’s time to ring in spring with your favorite accessories and bold colors that are sure to bring a pop to your outfits. Pantone recently released their 2017 spring colors, which focus on bright blues and oranges, as well as pinks and greens. Our featured Fashionista took some of these highlighted 2017 colors and incorporated them into her look giving a bold vibe to her outfit.

Our Fashionista brought in various pops of colors with her accessories and kept her main outfit simple. Flame swatch from the 2017 Pantone collection is incorporated in our Fashionista’s look by her belt and ring. The orange essentially ties the outfit together but also makes a statement with its contrast. Her aqua rings bring in the blues of spring and the white rings tone down the contrast between the aqua and orange.

Our Fashionista adds another Pantone pop of color with her yellow circle earrings. These earrings provide a pop for the upper half of her outfit but also ties together the ’70s aesthetic she is aiming for. These earrings work well with the outfit by setting a tone and also providing another aspect of color. I absolutely love how the yellow complements the orange and aqua she has in her other accessories.

Her main outfit was kept simple while still holding her ’70s vibe with her Fleetwood Mac inspired band T-shirt and her bell bottom jeans. By keeping her outfit simple, she was able to bring in bold colors to tie together her overall look and create an aesthetic.

Our Fashionista rocked her details, but your spring accessories don’t have to be limited to just jewelry or belts! Any of the following bold options are perfect for your spring outfits: hot pink flatsa floral scarf, or a Pantone yellow bag. Find your perfect detail and it’s a spring season match!
