The Best Midsummer Colors to Add to Your Wardrobe

Do you love summer colors but feel that most shades are either too vibrant or too soft? I’m with you. Recently, the fashion world has fallen in love with “in between” shades like blush, mauve, and sky blue, and so have I. I mean, what’s not to love about these kinds of colors? They’re flattering on virtually anyone, which means more and more people are being drawn to items of clothing in these gorgeous shades.

Just a few weeks ago a found this incredibly cute mauve cotton dress and I honestly want to wear it every day. Not only is the color amazing, but the keyhole cut-out is definitely on-trend right now! It’s the perfect way to show off a little bit of skin without doing too much. I just have to be careful not to spend too much time in the sun when wearing this dress in order to avoid a super awkward-looking tan line!

Now you may be wondering, “how would I accessorize a piece like this?” It’s actually very simple. Since the keyhole cut-out is the main detail of focus around the neck and chest, you can skip a necklace. Instead, I would suggest some cute and colorful bangles just to add some bling. For shoes, you could definitely go with a strappy neutral-colored sandal like mine or even a pair of wedges if you’re feeling fancier. You can then just add on some statement earrings to draw more attention to your face and voila! You’ve got the perfect summer look that will flatter anyone and will work for just about any slightly dressy event you have planned.

Do you have a trendy “in between” colored outfit like this mauve look that you want to share with your fellow Fashionista/os? Make sure to show it off on social media and don’t forget to tag @CFashionista!

The Best Style Pieces Are the Ones You Don’t Expect

Bomber jackets and blue leather skirts—two key items of clothing which are new to my personal wardrobe. Recently, however, I have felt compelled to step out of my comfort zone and experiment with different trends. The blue, faux leather skirt is the perfect example, and a great story to share. I first found the piece at a Zara store in England, and since then I have been experimenting with different looks. Yet this one particular look I am sharing with you today was completely created by my sister. She is a sporty girl, but I now discovered she can create a truly killer outfit.

Leather, whether it be faux or real, is making its way back into the fashion scene and I could not be more excited. I have always been one to love finishing off a look with a leather jacket for both formal and informal functions. Now, with faux leather pants and skirts, there is so much more to experiment with.

What I love in particular about this leather skirt is the color. The baby blue is such a key color for summer, and the style of the skirt is very versatile. For a more sports-oriented girl like my sister, having the option to quickly pull on a leather skirt or pants for a more formal night out can help to decrease the stress of deciding what to wear. That’s a major plus in any girl’s life, don’t you agree?

Bomber jackets are a style which I have seen many guys rock, and have even been very popular among the female fashion crowd. A great alternative to a leather jacket, I have seen the bomber jacket come in all variations of styles from statement colors to the authentic military print. In this case, the tan colored bomber jacket pairs nicely with the crop top with the faux leather skirt. By finishing off the look with a small wedge sandal, the look is complete for a nice dinner out or even an all-day look if that is your style.

Bomber jackets and faux leather pieces make for great statement items! Let me know in the comments below or on social media your go-to look with similar pieces. Maybe you’ll help to inspire my next fashion look!

Belted Up With Denim and Ready to Go

As Ritu Kumar once said, “Denim has always been an everyday symbol for style.” Denim is always a piece of your wardrobe to invest in because it has been in fashion since 1873, and, let’s be real, it’s not going anywhere. I’m huge on having pieces in my wardrobe that will carry me through a myriad of different looks. I’m also a huge proponent of color for the summer. When this Fashionista came to visit me at my styling job at the New York location of Scout and Molly’s, I introduced her to new, quality brands that deserve a peep.

One of my fashion icons is WeWoreWhat’s Danielle Bernstein, who is an avid supporter ofAGOLDE denim. When I first began working this summer, I was so excited to find that we carry the brand. These denim shorts fromAGOLDE are high-rise and are long enough that you won’t be afraid of showing too much skin. AGOLDE is a brand to invest in, and when you get your hands on the product you can feel the quality that will take you in for years to come. We college kids are on a budget, and it’s nice to have something that will last you beyond your years in college and remain stylish. This Fashionista felt super comfortable in the pair of shorts we styled, and loved how they had a baggy fit.

It’s really important to not sacrifice animals for style. Society can all agree that the look of animal products are beautiful, but the means of getting the product is gruesome. Matt and Nat is a luxury vegan leather brand from Canada. You may have seen this brand before on popular websites like ASOS. This light pink bag is the perfect summer bag that adds a pop of a color to any look. It is big enough to fit all the essentials, but doesn’t overwhelm the outfit.

Bohemian brand Bishop and Young is known for loose-fitting garments. This loose patterned crop top has a laced-up top. Lace-up tops have been super in this summer, and the colors of this top can carry into the fall season.

A perfect accessory to this outfit was a belt. This particular fringe taupe belt is from ADA collection. There are several ways to wrap this belt, but this Fashionista and I styled it so that the fringe ends wrap in the front. The taupe color perfectly accents the pinks in this outfit and also the deep blue denim wash.

Comment down below what your favorite style essential is and how you would wrap this belt!

Getting the Most Out of Your Wardrobe When Dressing for Work

When it comes to picking out an outfit for work, each day I find myself aimlessly staring at my closet thinking that I have nothing to wear. I always feel as though I am constantly repeating outfits and that all my coworkers will notice. I tend to invest more in my purchases, which makes it feel as though I have less to wear. While still keeping up with the current fashion trends, I like to make sure I have staple pieces throughout my wardrobe. To create this look, I mixed basic pieces with trendier pieces.

For this outfit, I chose a pair of black pants and a white top. This alone could be considered basic. However, the style of these two pieces is very trendy. The black pants are culottes which are on-trend for spring and summer. These pants can be worn with many different tops. I feel that they are going to be a staple item in my wardrobe this summer, especially for work. The fullness and layered effect on the sleeves add detail to the top. They are the key factor in turning a basic white T-shirt into a trendy top. This top fits boxy and was a little too long in proportion to the culottes, so I decided to tuck the shirt in which helped to defined my waist.

The silver sandals are perfect for summer. The combination of the white platform soles and the bright silver make them pop against the black culottes. Metallic colors are also on-trend for spring and summer. Incorporating this into shoes or accessories is the perfect way to do it. These sandals are also very versatile. They would look great with a pair of jeans as well.

I chose to keep my accessories minimal since I had a lot going on with the detailing of the sleeves and my shoes. All of the pieces in my outfit I can wear separately and style to make three different looks for work. This will help me to expand my wardrobe possibilities while still staying on-trend.

This look I styled would be perfect not only for work but for brunch with friends or a day out in the city. All of these pieces could be individually worn for day or night and dressed up or down. The pieces in this look are all trendy yet staple items in my wardrobe that will help to expand my possibilities for my work outfits.

My 5 Go-To Accessories of the Season

Summer is back in session! Pack up those itchy sweaters and put away the boots because it’s time to show off that natural glow. Wearing less is a good way to not only avoid tan lines but also stay cool under the beaming sun. More skin means more room for accessorizing. Don’t be a plain Jane this summer and stay fashion-forward with my five go-to accessories of the season.

1—Backpack it up. I am a very absent-minded individual and find myself forgetting something wherever I am. That is why carrying a bag wherever I go is essential to my everyday life. It allows me to keep all my important belongings in one place, making it harder to lose something (most of the time). Due to their small size and double strap, mini backpacks make for the perfect summer bag.

2—Toe’d you so. I am very self-conscious of my feet, especially when my nail polish has started to chip. As much as I hate showing my feet off, it is almost unavoidable in the summertime. You’d be lying if you said you have never been out, sandals and all, with a half painted foot. It is truly a mess. Next time you miss your much-needed nail appointment, put a ring on it! Toe rings can take the attention away from your unkempt nails and on that bling.

3—Jelly time. Jellies are making a comeback! First a trend of the ’90s, jelly sandals are the statement of the summer. Aside from being super cute, they are also very adjustable, making for the perfect fit for feet big and small.

4—A pop of color. I am a huge fan of tinted glasses. Although these kinds of glasses are not as practical for the exceptionally sunny days, they definitely make a statement. I shoot for darker colors such as purples and blues, which help block the sunlight to some extent. Lighter colors such as pinks and yellows are perfect for gloomier summer days.

5—Chain reaction. Chokers have made an impressive comeback within the past year. What I have found even more exciting than the chokers, however, is the chain chokers I have come across. I am a necklace enthusiast, but it was hard for me to find one that wasn’t too long. Most of the ones I would find would hang too low that my shirt would end up covering the pendant attached to it. Chain chokers solved this problem for me.

How-To—Add a Pop to Your Summer Wardrobe

What fun is summer without a pop of color every now and then? Summer is the perfect excuse to pull out all of your bright clothing and to add sunglasses to every outfit. That is exactly what I did for this look, with one of the best brands for summer, Lilly Pulitzer!

This look can be perfect for a variety of summer events. From graduation parties to evenings out to dinner, cute and casual looks like this one are great!

For this look, I am wearing a few of my favorite brands. Lilly Pulitzer is perfect for summer with the bright patterns. Since the shorts I am wearing are so busy, I paired them with a basic white tank. The shorts and tank top go perfectly with my number one go-to shoes, Tory Burch leather sandals. I love these sandals because they are simple, yet very stylish and match almost everything. Of course, I always have to add in a few of my favorite accessories, my Michael Kors watch and my favorite pair of Ray-Bans.

A good tip for wearing bright and busy clothing is to pair it with something not so busy.  Wearing bright patterned shorts with a bright patterned top could create a wild look, but pairing busy with basic is exactly what I did for this outfit, and, as always, accessorize!

Any time of the year, it is important to have accessories to give any outfit the finishing touch it needs. I add a watch to almost every outfit I wear, because it is simple but adds a pretty and classy look to any outfit. Sunglasses are one of my favorite accessories, whether they are on your face, on top of your head holding your hair back, or clipped to your shirt, they add the perfect summer feel to an outfit.

3 Ways to Style Birkenstocks

Let’s be real, when Marilyn Monroe said, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world,” she was definitely referring to Birkenstocks, right?

In all seriousness, Birkenstocks are a lifesaver, especially for the summertime. Prior to summer starting, I knew I needed to find a good pair of sandals, and I could hear Birkenstocks calling my name, so I caved. It was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. If you’re not wearing the right shoes, your summer can be pretty dreadful whether you’re doing touristy things on vacation or just relaxing in the sun. They have saved my feet from painful blisters and have made my feet very happy. Below are three summer looks that I put together styling Birkenstocks.

With this first look, I kept it simple by adding a plain white T-shirt and boyfriend jeans with the sandals. These shoes are easy to slip on and off, so, even if you’re running late, all you have to do is grab your purse and you’ll be on your way to brunch in no time.

While running errands and answering emails may be stressful, your feet shouldn’t have to suffer. In the second look, I paired an off-the-shoulder top and lace shorts with some gold jewelry. This look is easy to achieve and you’re ready to handle whatever the day throws at you.

The third summer look that I put together is a white romper with lace detailing. I love rompers because they make people think you spent more time getting ready than you actually did. All you have to do is slip on a romper and Birkenstocks and you can enjoy a night out with friends.

With these three outfit ideas, you’re guaranteed to conquer your summer in style.

How to Style Jeans for Summer

Summer is a time for dresses, shorts, and T-shirts, but some of us don’t like to have our legs out all day, every day. It can be hard to look cute in the humid summer months, and it’s even harder if you’re not a fan of shorts. Believe it or not, jeans are a great wardrobe staple in the summer!

Skinny jeans are on their way out, making way for funkier boyfriend and flare-leg jeans. Boyfriend and straight-leg jeans are perfect for the summer because they don’t cling to your legs and feel sweaty or restricting. Also, a ton of designers and stores sell cropped and ankle-length denim. These are also perfect for summer because your whole leg isn’t covered and you can wear cute lace-up sandals. Lighter washes are a good look for summer too. They are a great backdrop for colorful and patterned tops, and they brighten up outfits and make them look more summery.

It can be hard to find cute tops to wear in the summer months because it’s too hot to wear anything other than a bathing suit. Off-the-shoulder tops are perfect to wear with jeans to look cute and stay cool. Most off-the-shoulder tops are a looser fit, which is great because it doesn’t feel like your clothes are stuck to you. Linen and gauze-like fabrics are great for summer because they are breathable and add some texture to an outfit.

Chunky sandals are the perfect shoe to wear with jeans in the summer. They are really comfortable and easy to walk in, but still cute and trendy. Chunky-heeled sandals are also great because they are casual but can also be dressed up. They look great with jeans and a graphic T-shirt during the day, but you can also style them with jeans and a flashy off-the-shoulder top to go out.

Forget What You Heard—Black is Still the New Black

As years come and go, the phrase “(insert color here) is the new black” is always repeated. But as I have come to learn, black is, and always will be, the new black. Black is a go-to color due to its slimming effect, how it’s easy to match, and it how can be worn in every season. Whether it’s because you’re not a color aficionado or you’re mourning the loss of your favorite The Bachelorette contestant, black is always here for you.

I chose to create this predominately black ensemble with my favorite black denim skirt, black sandals, and a black tank top with a black bralette underneath. I completed this look with a blue denim jacket to create a hint of contrast while tying in the denim pieces. Denim-on-denim is a huge trend this summer, and I can only hope it’s here to stay. Between all of the different denim washes, the possibilities for denim-on-denim are endless. We owe a shout-out to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake for showing us this trend.

One of my favorite details regarding this outfit is the open back feature of my tank top. It opens up the perfect opportunity to display my favorite black, lacy bralette. This peek-a-boo feature also adds a little flair to the outfit and helps keep me cool during summer days.

The black sandals also dress up the look but also transform this outfit from day to night. By taking off the jacket and adding some darker makeup, this outfit is great for a night out on the town.

The versatility of all of these pieces, as well as their ability to tie together, is what makes this outfit one of my favorites. So, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t always wear black.

Blue is the New Black

It is finally July! That means schoolwork has come to an end and summer festivities may begin. Personally, I have started my summer off with a bit of shopping, to say the least. While on my shopping endeavors, I have discovered the latest trend for all Fashionistas this summer; blues and stripes galore! Because of this, I have compiled this lookbook for fun, simple and trendy outfit ideas for July. Whether you are starting an internship or simply soaking up the sun, these looks can be worn anywhere and by everyone.

I love stepping out of my comfort zone by trying new styles, and this jumpsuit is the perfect example. Even though I adore rocking new trends, I still want to stay cool and comfortable, especially in the summer. This blue and white striped jumpsuit caught my eye the second I saw it on the hanger and knew I had to have it. The side slits add an edgy touch to the look (and not to mention how flowy it is!) Jumpsuits are awesome because they are all one piece so it is extremely easy to slip on and go. For the footwear, I paired the jumpsuit with a lace-up heel. If you’re looking for a more relaxed, bohemian vibe, a wrapped-up sandal would also be perfect for this look. The jumpsuit is a statement piece itself, so I kept jewelry to a minimum and popped on hoop earrings.

This next look is extremely similar to the previous, but is perfect for a day that is just too warm for a jumpsuit! A romper is perfect for the on-the-go gal because it is so easy to slip on, and simple enough to change from a day to night look. Also, the tie at the waist cinches in the romper and flatters any body type. For this look, I paired the romper with platform wedges to not only give myself a little height but make my legs appear leaner. Also, pro tip—not only have platform shoes made a comeback, but they are the most comfortable heels. If you’re out on the town all day and are in the market for a new, yet comfortable heel, I highly recommend platform shoes. Again, I like to keep jewelry simple with a statement romper like this, so I paired it with my hoop earrings once again, and a simple bar necklace.

Last, but not least, is this preppier look inspired by one of my favorite fashion bloggers, Krista Robertson, or better known by her blog, Covering the Bases. This ruffled top adds a touch of femininity to the look and looks perfect paired with these white, distressed jeans. This outfit is perfect for anyone, whether you’re having brunch with friends or looking for a more casual intern look. The distressing on the jeans add a subtle detail to really make the outfit stand out. Also, if you’re looking for another style of a striped top, look no further than this fellow Fashionista. For the accessories, I wore a simple brown sandal and spruced up the look with pearl earrings and a beaded necklace. If you’re on the search for a bright, yet casual summer outfit, then this look is the perfect match for you!
