Here Are 4 Ways to Fall in Love with Your Solitude

The words in Rupi Kaur’s New York Times bestseller Milk and Honey struck my soul in more ways than one. A page that particularly opened my eyes to the internal struggles of the world quoted, “fall in love with your solitude.” This led me to wondering, what is it that makes our generation so terrified of being alone?

I took it upon myself to challenge these fears and defeat the dependence we all drown in throughout our daily lives—this made me realize that being comfortable on your own is practically a superpower. Requesting a table for one gives you the opportunity to occupy yourself with nothing but your own thoughts, feelings, and desires, and it’s absolutely liberating. It can teach us fortitude and the ability to satisfy our own needs, while also bringing forth the longing to explore and confidence to be an individual. So why is there such a negative stigma?

Total solitude is meant to be celebrated—all it takes is one killer experience and you’ll be hooked. So if spending a weekend solo is a prospect you do not find wildly appealing, I’m here to change your mind. Beginners, here’s what to do:

1—Manage your time

As life pulls you in several different directions, always remember to never let a busy schedule force you to give up the things you love. Write your poetry. Read your books. Go on those nightly runs. Even when it feels like there’s not enough time in the day, it’s so important to make time for yourself.

2—Find your safe place

In a culture that thrives on constant stimulation, the trick to enjoying the accompaniment of your own mind is to never be bored. Finding a place that satisfies all your needs is key. Intimidated? Take baby steps and try a matinee movie or mid-day shopping trip. An hour a day is sure to keep you feeling refreshed and ready for the big leagues in no time!

3—Disconnect

Because we live in an age where you’re reasonably presumed dead if you don’t answer your phone in a certain period of time, airplane mode is truly an electronic saving grace if you want total peace going off-grid. Instead of investing your “me time” in everyone else’s whereabouts on Snapchat, you owe it to yourself to pull the plug.

4—Journal

Now that you’ve ditched your cell, bring a pen. During the loner phase, you’re forced to speak less and listen more—whether that be to your personal thoughts or eavesdropping on the quirky couple behind you, write it down. Self-reflection is the first step to personal growth.

No matter what place you’re at in your journey, be easy, take your time, and remember, you can always come home…to yourself. It’s time to start living and spend time just doing you.

This Simple Beauty Routine Can Do More Than Save Time

Three years ago, I started to do the unthinkable—wear only the bare necessities for makeup. This was before the simple beauty routine was actually popularized by Glossier and fresh-faced models. My decision to begin this no-makeup makeup routine required no complex thought process; it was simply a result of saving time in the morning. While I didn’t realize at the time that this change would result in anything more than a shorter morning routine, the benefits started pouring in. If you’re on the verge of cutting your beauty routine in half but are still unsure, keep reading below to see the hidden perks nobody tells you about. P.S.—your skin will thank you.

1—You’ll focus your energy on your skincare routine

A lazy beauty routine implies putting minimal effort into your routine, but who says this applies to skincare? When I spent 30 minutes on my makeup every morning, I had zero skincare products. Fast-forward three years later, and now I own too many to count. Cutting back on beauty products that block your skin allows you to actually stop and care for the largest organ on your body. I now moisturize at least twice a day, use vitamin serums, and try to use a face mask on a regular basis. You know that meme where skincare can magically cure all of your ailments, even if every other aspect of your life is crashing and burning? I can confirm that to be 100 percent true. Just as Glossier says, skin is in.

2—Makeup will become a tool to enhance your features, not hide

Using only three to four beauty products makes it nearly impossible to hide your flaws, and will enhance the features you love. Like your cheekbones so much that you want to make them glow? Use a dewy highlighter. Have naturally bushy eyebrows but want to make them just a little more defined? Apply a simple brow gel to your brows. This technique not only saves money, but it also allows you to realize the features you love about your face. Say hello to a huge boost in confidence.

3—You’ll have more time to do, well, everything

It’s clear that a simple beauty routine will literally cut minutes of time, but the free time will show up in more ways than the obvious. Time to decompress and take care of yourself will increase; instead of spending 20 minutes on eyeliner, you could meditate every morning. You won’t be worried about always looking your best when you leave the house, and this automatically gives you the energy to worry about more important aspects of your life, like your future summer internship. You’ll learn that makeup is only a tiny detail in your life instead of its basis—as it should be.

How has turning to a lazy beauty routine changed your life? Leave your response in the comments!

I Washed My Face with Oil for 6 Months—Here’s What Happened

While scrolling through Pinterest one fateful day, in the midst of all of the DIYs and healthy cookie dough recipes, I stumbled upon an article about the oil cleansing method (OCM). Now I’ve been to dermatologist offices, so I’m aware of the bad reputation that oil has in the acne industry. Even so, I couldn’t help but be intrigued.

PHOTO: Cassidy Clark

I researched more about the method and found pictures of glowing skin and rave reviews. Some fans of this method had managed to clear cystic acne, and others hadn’t purchased a traditional facial cleanser or moisturizer in years. Some of you may be wondering what the heck the oil cleansing method is. This method is a skin cleansing regimen in which you smear oil all over your face, then place a warm washcloth over top to open up your pores. You massage the oil into your skin, wipe away the excess, and you’re done. The idea behind this is that the oil you put on your face dissolves the bad oils in your skin. This will supposedly leave your face clear and moisturized. I grabbed some olive oil from my kitchen and proceeded to forego traditional face wash for six months.

My research suggested that I would go through a transition period, where I’d break out before things got better. This period typically lasts two to three weeks, and then supposedly my skin would be glowing. It’s safe to say that in all my six months I never made it to this light at the end of the tunnel. Sure, there were days when my skin would look and feel great, but for every one of those days there would be two or three where I’d be sprouting pimples like crazy, and it was not a good look.

I figured that I may just be using the wrong oil, so I began to invest in a few different kinds: jojoba, rose hip seed, coconut, and castor, just to name a few. Nothing worked, and I began to feel my skin grow oddly dry and even more zit-infested.

In an act of despair, I drove to the drugstore and picked up the chemical-laden cleanser I had been using before my OCM journey. And you know what? It worked. Soon after, I discovered my holy grail face wash, black African soap, and I’ve never looked back into my greasy past.
In conclusion, this method didn’t work for me. There are obviously people who it does work for, though, so if you feel inclined, try it out! You may regret it, but you might love it.

6 Items Even Minimalists Should Keep in Their Bathroom

The term “beauty product” probably means something different to all of us. Everyone has their own definition of what counts as a beauty product, and everyone has their own preference for how many they own. For example, I own about 10, but my sister owns at least 100. Whether you’re more like me, or more like my sister, there are a few staple items I think everyone should own, or at least keep in their bathroom “just in case.”

1—Candle

The first is something simple and relaxing—a candle. I’m a candle enthusiast; I always have one in my bathroom, one in my bedroom, one in my kitchen, one on the balcony, etc. Even if you aren’t so into the idea of candles, the bathroom is the perfect place to start! Choose from aromatherapy, citrus, fresh linen, vanilla sugar, and so much more. There is a scent for everyone, and I promise it will make showers, baths, or even just getting ready in the morning better!

2—Face Mask

These are a staple item for me. Even though they’re not something I use daily, I always have one lying around. The best part is that there’s a mask for whatever you need—healing, moisturizing, rejuvenating, sleeping, you name it! Not only are they relaxing but they are so good for your skin as well. Your face will thank you.

3—Eyeshadow

If I’m being completely transparent, I am not an eyeshadow artist. I know so many people who are really good at it, but unfortunately, I am not one of those people. However, I do think that eyeshadow is fun to experiment with, and can dress up any look in a matter of seconds.

4—Facial Spray

This stuff is a game changer. It’s starting to become more and more popular, and I can see why! Whether you choose makeup setting spray, hydrating protection spray, or the ever so popular Mario Badescu Rosewater Facial Spray, you’re bound to feel like a new person after just one use.

5—Perfume

I’m sure this one seems like a given, but I still wanted to mention it, as it is a staple item. I also wanted to share a little beauty hack I recently learned! If you rub a tiny amount of Vaseline on your neck before spraying your fragrance, the smell will last longer!

PHOTO: Emily Truong

6—Bath Bomb

Last but not least, the bath bomb. Similar to candles, I am a sucker for these. I didn’t really get into bubble baths until last year when I finally had my own bathroom and decided to try one of these bombs that were all the rave. However, now I’m really into them. They’re perfect for unwinding at the end of a long day, or even just to relax in the afternoon.

4 Easy Ways to Start the Semester Off Right

Summer is over, and classes are back in session. As much as I would love to still be spending hours at the beach or staying in my pajamas all day, I have to change up the pace. Starting the semester off right will better the chances for a productive and a less stressful school year; here are a few tips to help get back into the swing of things!

1—Get organized and stay organized

PHOTO: Valerie Cammack

Let’s be real, we have all gotten a planner or calendar and only used it once before finding it again at the end of the semester in the bottom of a drawer. Start this semester off by not only getting a planner to map out your days but organize your space as well. Creating a more relaxing environment can help you take on every task that comes your way.

2—Balanced diet

PHOTO: Lex Kelly

You can’t be great if you don’t feel great! I often use the excuse of being too busy to prepare a proper meal or eat more than once a day, but maintaining a balanced diet will allow you to have more energy and fuel your productivity. Remember to stay hydrated; water is an essential part of your diet.

3—Set a sleep schedule

PHOTO: Jordyn Wissert

College can get hectic, resulting in some serious sleep scarifies (procrastination can have a lot to do with it). Setting a sleep schedule and sticking to it will keep your body on a routine and ensure that you are well rested. If you stay organized, procrastination won’t win this semester, and you can focus on your beauty rest!

4—Don’t forget to have fun

PHOTO: Kenia Viezcas

Yes, school can be stressful, but don’t forget to have fun too! Pencil-in fun days with your girls or even some one-on-one time. “Treat yo’ self” to a day out with your friends or a relaxing day of self-care with your favorite skincare products. No matter what mood you’re in, it’s always important to schedule-in some regular time to unwind and enjoy!

What are some additional good habits to practice this semester? Let us know in the comments below.

Think Skincare and Makeup Are 2 Separate Things? Think Again.

Loving makeup is nothing new, but as time goes on we as a society have become more conscious of what our skin doesn’t like. Over time, makeup can make you feel more oily and dry based on your skin type and even cause more breakouts.

Here’s the good part: we don’t have to sacrifice makeup for skincare! Shocking, right? But here’s the thing; there are healthy ways to take care of our skin while still having an everyday makeup routine.

Keeping Clean

First, never sleep in your makeup. Giving your skin a good scrub at the end of the day is always a good idea. Our skin is our body’s largest organ, and it deserves some time to breathe. A great way to refresh your face at night is to use an all-natural cleanser, like Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser. This brand specifically goes by the phrase, “Skincare first. Makeup second,” so they are super credible in their intentions when it comes to healthy skin. Another great way to leave your face feeling extra fresh is doing a fun face mask. I’m a big fan of Yes To’s face masks. The ingredients check out, and they offer so many great options in their products.

Makeup That Helps

Another tip in taking care of your skin is to try to use the best makeup for it. You’re essentially feeding your skin, and just like food, some things are healthier to digest than others. This is why some beauty products leave you feeling oily while others don’t phase your skin after removal at all. Glossier carries an array of awesome products, all putting skincare first. I feel safe using these products, and you totally should, too. Glossier isn’t the only brand that cares about your skin’s health, of course. Some brands carried by Sephora that also value being all-natural are BITE Beauty, RMS, Lilah B., Antonym, and my personal favorite, Milk Makeup. Some of these natural products I would highlight are the Holographic Stick and Cooling Water by Milk Makeup and the Certified Organic Baked Blush by Antonym.

See? It’s easier to take care of your skin than you probably thought. Beauty companies aren’t out to hurt our skin; in fact, many want to help us! Just be cautious of what products you’re using, and stick to a skincare routine that works for you.

4 Easy Tips to De-Stress Every College Student Should Know

Heading back to school is exciting, but also undeniably stressful. One day you’re lying on the beach worrying if you applied enough SPF, and the next you’re waking up at 8 a.m., worrying about getting to class on time, unpacking your suitcases, and buying new textbooks. It’s hard. Luckily, there are easy ways to make the transition a little less stressful. Here are a few of my favorite, scientifically-backed tips to help!

PHOTO: Kelly Rogowski

1—Add houseplants to your dorm

PHOTO: Anna Coke

Although most schools don’t allow pets, pet houseplants are fair game. They may not be as fun to cuddle with, but they will purify the air and induce your relaxation response. In one study, researchers found that stressed-out subjects who entered a room full of plants had a greater drop in blood pressure than those who entered a room without them. If houseplants don’t match your decor this year, simply taking a walk in a park can have a similar effect.

2—Create a positivity playlist

PHOTO: Kenia Viezcas

Studies have found that listening to classical music slows heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and even decreases levels of stress hormones; so if you’re a fan of classical music, you’re all set! Honestly though, listening to any genre of music you love will boost endorphins and help calm you down. I keep headphones on me and have a specific playlist of songs that make me smile (Adele’s heartbreakingly beautiful breakup songs get their own playlist) that I put on whenever I need a pick me up during the day.

3—Download a meditation app

PHOTO: Kelly Rowgowski

Everybody knows that meditating calms you down, yet many skip it when looking to de-stress since, well, how exactly do you do it? That’s where apps come in. Two great ones for beginners are Insight Timer and Aura, both of which are free to download. Insight Timer features over 4,000 guided meditations as well as a selection of calming, background sounds. Aura offers a daily, unique three-minute meditation, perfect for a short break between classes.

4— Eat a banana (or anything with potassium)

PHOTO: Lex Kelly

Don’t worry, if you hate bananas, any potassium-rich snack will work (avocado toast included). Potassium is a known regulator of blood pressure and low potassium levels have been associated with a greater risk for depression. One delicious way to get your potassium is to chop a peeled banana in half, spread almond butter on it, roll it in cacao nibs, stick a skewer in the bottom and freeze it overnight. Voilà: the perfect mood-boosting breakfast!

Five Ways to Feel Your Best This Semester

Created with Simply Summer’s Eve™

Let’s get real here: being a student is hard. As a woman in college, it’s not uncommon to feel anxious, stressed, or just plain not in control of your life—and allowing your wellness to fall to the back burner can only exacerbate these feelings. So this year, consider the new semester a fresh start. Your GPA is high, your tan is strong, you are thriving—and you’re going to keep it that way. Keep reading for our top self-care tips to be the best version of you this semester.

 Move Daily

“Netflix and chill” is our favorite mode, too, but unfortunately walking to and from the kitchen doesn’t actually count as exercise. Even if it’s not a daily activity, schedule 30 minutes of activity into your schedule a few times a week. It’s amazing what endorphins can do for your brain power, and you’ll be thanking yourself when your GPA suddenly starts to fly off the charts.

Take Small Steps Toward Personal Care

Yes, this should be a given—but when you’re running on two hours of sleep and you have back-to-back classes for six hours straight, sometimes wellness isn’t your first priority. Our best tip? Make your routine on-the-go ready. A simple kit with basics like a toothbrush, deodorant, and Simply Summer’s Eve™ Cleansing Cloths will ensure you feel your best at all times—no matter what. And for those days where you may have a few minutes to spare for a relaxing shower, pamper yourself with a fresh cleanser like the Simply Summer’s Eve™  Gentle Cleansing Wash which features a luxurious, soft foam infused with skin-loving botanicals.

Eat Well

We know an everything-free diet can be expensive, so focus on the feasible and come up with a plan to incorporate healthy foods into your diet. Whether it’s adding greens into your smoothie or choosing almonds over chips and fruit over cookies. Small changes can make a huge impact on the way you feel.

Build Relationships

The stress of college can make you feel like crawling into a hole and hiding from the world at times—but when you do feel that way, you should do exactly the opposite. Everything you want is outside of your comfort zone. If you’re overwhelmed, fight the anti-social voice in your head and reach out to the people you love. Whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee together or hosting a full-out movie marathon–these moments are the best medicine for your anxious soul.

Sleep

Okay, so you probably don’t need a reminder to get your z’s—but those 16 hours you slept after that all-nighter you pulled don’t exactly equal out. Try establishing a routine that’s not only healthier, but easier to follow as well. Your first step would be reading then going to bed an hour earlier to get a head start on your mornings. Who knows? You may even start showing up to that 8 a.m.
