WHAT TO WEAR: Flannel Domination Incorporation

In a world dominated by trends in the fashion world, it’s hard to know what willl stick and what will die out quickly or what will be chic and fashionable for years to come. I feel like you can base this off of how much versatility it has to almost any outfit you want to pair it with. One of those staple items is most definitely the flannel.

Flannels have the ability to up any outfit. You can put a flannel around your waist if you’re wearing a skater dress, a skirt, leggings, overalls, shorts, and especially any kind of denim. In this Fashionisto’s case he paired the red gingham flannel with a inspirational graphic T-shirt, skinny sweatpants, and Converse. The flannel tied around his waist was a perfect additive that took his simple outfit from just nice and casual to chic and casual. The added accessory of a snapback gave the outfit a final touch of cool. Fashionista’s you can recreate this look and take inspiration and be just as chic and cool as this laid back Fashionisto. A favorite thing among the celebrities today is borrowing from the boys. Don’t hesitate to gravitate to the male section to get that perfect oversize flannel you can throw over a spaghetti strap dress or the classic high-waisted shorts and white crop top ensemble.

The versatility and chicness of a flannel can’t be denied. Not only this, but this clothing item has more gender neutrality then any other staple piece, other than the plain white T-shirt. They come in a variety of colors so you can find one that would go perfect with any cute, chic, casual outfit you want to wear. Flannel domination has made its mark and I think it’s going to be around for a pretty long time.

STYLE GURU STYLE: Millennial Pink

Bubblegum, unicorns, Barbie, so many things come to mind when I see the color pink. Surprisingly the color pink is trending. This may be because ’80s fashion is back. The ’80s was a decade of bold style and colors. “That heady mix of salmon, blush, bubblegum, and coral has been popping up on shopping bags (Acne Studios), books (hello, 2016 best-seller Sweetbitter!) and even tabletops.” Take a trip to New York restaurants Café Henrie and Cha Cha Matcha and you’ll see what I mean—millennial pink is everywhere. According to Vogue, “It’s gone viral—and probably for a good reason: According to color therapy expert Constance Hart, pink has a special mood-boosting quality, and she describes it as the color that ‘opens you up to self-love.’”

I am not even a girly girl but the love for the color pink has been helpful for my Instagram aesthetic and how I choose the perfect pop of color for my outfits. I’ve been wearing my rose gold bomber jacket or throwing on my favorite pink bandana. But I just recently found my new favorite pink acid wash boxy denim jacket that I plan to decorate in girly pins and iron on letters, to give it some personality. My black high-waisted jeans are great with every outfit. I put some classic black and white high-top chucks and my graphic Elton John T-shirt that I bought in concert. The black on black makes the pink in my jacket pop.

No matter the context there’s no denying that the color pink has a certain charm. Want to dive into the trend? Try a soft pink romper this summer or exuberant heels that will surely make a splash in the office! Even if you’re not a girly-girl like me, this still works.

STYLE GURU STYLE: Suburban Urban

I think defining your sense of style in a few quick words might be one of the hardest things to do. I have tried for many years to discover where my style was headed, but it is difficult to pinpoint exactly, for it is always changing. One day I can feel inspired by a feminine skirt and blouse for my outfit, while other days I can sport a pair of boyfriend jeans and an oversized male T-shirt. With this eclectic type of inspiration, what exactly was my style?  After a flip through my closet and some searching through my drawers, I have come to realize that my style is an urban-inspired collection of clothes worn by a very suburban girl.

From the oversize denim jackets, colored sneakers, and ripped jeans, to jogger pant sweats, and leather leggings; this style is overwhelmingly what I sport the most. If my Pinterest tags and posts don’t say enough, then my timberland booties and authentic leather jacket speak enough for themselves. In this specific outfit I chose, I’m sporting my typical go-to look.

A graphic hoodie printed with a reference to one of my favorite cities, New York, with a pair of fitted skinny jeans. I of course had to layer it with one of my statement outerwear pieces, which in this instance, was my army green bomber. To tie it all together, I paired my knee-high suede boots and a simple gold watch. Whether it is in the city streets of Temple’s Philly campus or back home on my suburban sidewalks, I am always strutting my true urban suburban style.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Chanel and Gucci

I found this fabulous Fashionista walking out of the main building on campus as I was walking in to go to the cafe for some lunch. I spotted her incredible Gucci handbag and her lavish Chanel booties. She paired the two items with her favorite pair of GRLFRND Denim, which are boyfriend style, and cuffed them at the bottom giving her enough room to show off her famous shoes. She is also wearing a super cute cream, velvet tank top, and a navy neck scarf. The last item that this Fashionista slipped into was her black teddy coat, which has been an incredible trend this season.

The details in this look are stunning. Her teddy coat has a small collar, and every piece of fabric is feathered on the outside. It is subtle enough to where the style doesn’t take too much away from the rest of her outfit, but extravagant enough to not be ignored. The neck scarf she is modeling has a beautiful white design splashed on certain sections of the fabric, adding just hint of elegance. Her chosen velvet shirt and jeans are perfect for this outfit, especially in this cold weather. Her Chanel ankle boots are half black and half cream colored, and there is the small, but anticipated, Chanel symbol placed in gold at the edge of her heal. The last item on this Fashionista’s checklist is her Gucci handbag. It has a silver chain for holding onto, or sliding over her shoulder, an alligator print, and two red interlocking snakes at the snap.

All these colors and important little details work perfectly together, and would be perfect for a day out in the city, or certainly walking into a new class. This outfit is a great statement look for any college campus.

WHAT TO WEAR: Eight O’Clock Blues

I’m sure we have all experienced the pain of waking up early and struggling to make it to our 8 a.m. on time. You’re about to miss the bus, and there’s no time to even try to put together a decent outfit. So, your only option is to throw on leggings and a sweatshirt. You promise yourself that you’ll wake up earlier the next day and put together a nice outfit to make up for today’s incident (yeah right). Though, waking up in the morning and styling a great outfit doesn’t have to be so hard. After all, the better you look, the better you feel, right?

This Fashionista makes going to class look so easy. She chose a cream, knit sweater that crisscrosses at the chest. It’s trendy, yet perfect for the colder weather. You can’t go wrong with skinny jeans, just like the pair this Fashionista is rocking. Also, her brown, leather booties are a staple in everyone’s closet. To top off her outfit, she decided to layer her sweater with an army green vest to add a touch of color. For accessories, this Fashionista wanted to keep it simple, after all, she is going to class. She chose two gold rings that compliment her outfit. This style is simple and perfect for spending your day on campus.

So, next time your alarm goes off and you want to press snooze for the third time, rethink it. Instead, give yourself some time to choose an outfit that you won’t regret being seen in or even better, pick out that perfect outfit the night before and you can hit snooze one more time.

STYLE ADVICE: Simple and on the Go

As a college student, it is almost a guarantee that you will experience the greatest amount of stress and work load that life has to offer all a once. It is stressful for multiple reasons, mainly for the fact that it always feels like there is so much to do with so little time. It is this type of daily grind that causes most college students to dress quickly and comfortably. Although your first thought may be sweatpants and a T-shirt, that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case if your trying to achieve the comfort and the style that comes natural to you.

This look sported by this Fashionista may seem simple at first glance, but it serves its purpose for many style-lovers that are on the go. This college student caught my eye for the simplicity and practicality of her look. When I asked a little bit about her, she explained that she’s a full-time student at Philadelphia University while working a demanding part-time job at a clothing retailer, so she truly is always on the go. She said she loves to have outfits that are chic and trendy for work, but still give her the ability to transition back into the busy student life that she lives. I couldn’t help but decide to talk about how this look achieved just that.

Some of the pieces that really brought the look together in my opinion are her denim jacket and her fashionable, metallic adidas sneakers. Her knee slit, black jeans make the look casual and served as the balance to bring everything together, while her denim jacket helped accessorize her plain white T-shirt to keep her on trend. The pieces that serve as the true pop of style and color are her sneakers. For many looks that are similar to this kind of style, the outfit almost always has to be simple in order to really bring out the real character of the sneakers. The central theme of comfort and style is all easily achieved when these very pieces are collectively put together right. It is safe to say that this Fashionista is a clear example of how effortless it is to put a great look together while still living the busy college life.

STYLE ADVICE: All About The Basics

Boys, if you’re trying to impress your partner, fashion is probably the easiest way you could do it. For me personally, a guy with good style is way more memorable than a guy with a good body. Many of my male friends come to me for fashion advice on what to wear all the time and I almost always tell them the same thing: simple, simple, simple.

My guy friends complain that they have no style or that fashion is hard and time consuming, but it really doesn’t have to be. Fashion doesn’t mean having to look haute couture 24/7. I wear leggings and sneakers all the time! The trick is to invest in a few high quality basics that you can throw on super easily in the morning without giving it a second thought. That way, you can still brew your morning coffee, make it to your 8 am on time, and still rock the rest of your day as the stylish Fashionista/o you are. There are no excuses!

This handsome Fashionisto is wearing a navy blue knit sweater from Uniqlo with a white collared shirt underneath and grey skinny jeans with patch detailing on both knees. The beanie covers up his bedhead, and give the outfit a more laid-back look. His Chelsea boots from H&M and minimalistic watch add a smart casual vibe that pulls the look together. In total, this outfit only took him five minutes to pick out, and he says that the chicks dig it. Overall, the outfit not only looks neat and put together, but it is also extremely comfortable and easy to wear.

I am a firm believer that everyone has the potential to look nice. It about what makes you feel confident and comfortable. When people ask me how I dress nicely every day, I say “it’s simple. I just wake up and put on clothes that make me happy.” And as long as whatever clothes you put on makes you happy, then you look nice. It’s as simple, simple, simple as that.

STYLE GURU BIO: Phoebe Vatis

Hello! My name is Phoebe and I am a freshman at Boston University where I am studying human physiology with the hopes of going to medical school. While science is my academic focus, fashion is one of my passions. I hope to abolish some of the existing stereotypes of women in the STEM field, such as the idea that women can’t be intelligent and fashionable. I strive to show that beauty and intelligence are not mutually exclusive, and where they intersect is the place where I find my balance.

I have always believed that fashion is an art form; a platform through which a person can express oneself to the world. The way I present myself is something I’ve taken very seriously, whether dressing for school or a formal occasion. As a figure skater, I am immersed in a culture that draws attention to external beauty. This has inevitably made me aware of the way I present myself. Whether to judges or strangers on the street, I feel my best and most capable when I am confident in the way I look.

Currently, I describe my style as retro prep. For the majority of my life, I have been very preppy and colorful. However, in the past year I have grown more enamored with neutral and dark colors, and have been enjoying expanding my style to include bolder choices with the intention of expressing the newer elements of my personality. I have grown to be comfortable with the concept that I can have more than one style, so I am enjoying mixing it up and branching out to try new looks. My favorite trends right now are knee-high boots, bomber jackets, and chokers. In fact, I love anything from the ’90s.

In my outfit, I am wearing Topshop black ripped jeans and a rose colored bomber jacket from Free People. The black undertones allow the jacket to stand out in contrast with the rest of the outfit. To pull it together, I paired these items with white and gold sneakers by New Balance and a Free People choker. I chose to stick to beige tones in this outfit as they works much better with my complexion than gray and silver.

I am ecstatic to see what my first semester as a Style Guru brings as I learn more about  trends on my campus and beyond!

STYLE GURU BIO: Mara Kubicki

Hi all! My name is Mara Kubicki. I am a junior studying news and information and strategic communications at the University of Kansas. I am so excited to be writing for CollegeFashionista this semester! I love fashion and cannot wait to show you my style.

Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved dressing up in my mom’s old prom dresses and bridesmaid dresses. I would wear high heels that were way too big, silver eye shadow, and bright red lipstick. Safe to say that I wasn’t a shy little girl. Since those days, my style has evolved, thankfully.

I love fashion. I love that I can express myself through my clothes each and every day. I love trying new and different trends. I love to switch up my style based on how I feel when I wake up in the morning. I love to write as well, so this combination of fashion and writing is right up my alley.

For this look, I put together a bold combination. I put a band T-shirt with ripped, black skinny jeans, and paired it with a leopard print faux fur coat. I finished the look with flat black ankle boots, a blush choker, and a bold, purple lip. I can’t get enough of this look because it’s fun and makes a statement. What a perfect, fresh combination for the new year!

I love this look and I hope all of you Fashionistas do, too! Be sure to follow me on social media to keep up with all my latest looks!

STYLE GURU BIO: Erin McLemore

Hey everyone!

My name’s Erin McLemore and spring 2017 is going to be my first semester as a Style Guru and I cannot wait to get started! I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of CollegeFashionista’s team and I’m hoping to gain experience as well as connect with other Style Gurus throughout my time here.

I am currently a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University studying fashion merchandising and I love living in Richmond! I grew up in a suburb about 20 minutes away from the city, but it feels like a different world. The diversity of fashion, personalities and even hair color is something Richmond and myself thrive on. I hope to capture all of this during my time as a Style Guru.

My personal style focuses on basics that emphasize one or two pieces. In this look, I think the attention quickly goes to the shoes. I got them from Urban Outfitters and absolutely adore them! Since I wanted to put the spotlight on the shoes, I chose to pair them with black skinny jeans, a simple white T-shirt, as well as a vintage bomber jacket. This bomber jacket is one of my favorite pieces I own, I feel like bomber jackets are perfect for this time of year along with the fact they are very in.

Accessorizing is one of my favorite things to do, so I added a choker and wore my Pandora rings I usually wear on a daily basis and some sunglasses. Overall I feel this look represents my style fairly well.
