STYLE GURU BIO: Isabella Orm

My name is Isabella Orm and I am an island girl who recently started college at Johnson and Wales University. I have always been a “moda” enthusiast, but now that I am majoring in fashion merchandising and retail marketing, my passion has grown to immense proportions. It makes me extremely happy to be part of the Guru Gang and to be able to share my vision article by article.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in Puerto Rico and had lived there all my life until I started college. Honest recommendation: do not die without going; you will not regret it. Health and fitness are everyday topics in my life. After the beach, a museum is always my favorite place. I crave adventure, and traveling the world is one of my biggest desires in life. If it was not for art and music, my days would be completely lifeless. I lost count of how many times I have dyed my hair a different color. As you can see, I am everything but conformist. I have a strong character, but I am overall a happy human.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” When it comes to fashion, that is precisely my mantra. I am a fan of monochromatic looks and textiles with textures. However, I cannot say I have a particular style. What I CAN say is that I never use too much color in my outfits. Neutrals make up the majority of my wardrobe and almost all the time, I either wear sneakers or heels; there is no in between. I am constantly looking for something edgy to add to my outfit and I think it is not all about having expensive pieces, but about having thought-provoking ones; the kind that have the ability to turn into conversation pieces.

For my bio look, I am wearing a white T-shirtblack lace crop top and high-waisted jeans on a warm winter day in Puerto Rico; all pieces from Zara. It was not planned, I promise. High-waisted is always a good idea because it helps give a good shape to your body. To keep it trendy, wear a lace crop top as a layer over a white T-shirt. Tip: try to use only 3 colors in your outfits. It gives it a much cleaner look. Keeping it simple, but chic, I added classic pearl earrings, this time extra large, a black choker, and big mirror Quay Australia sunglasses. I wore my daily arm candy: Daniel Wellington watch and Cartier bracelet. Black bag and wedges, both from BCBGeneration to complete the look. This is an outfit that easily transitions from day to night.

Thank you for stopping by! Stick around for many more things to come and always remember: keep it up close and stylish.

STYLE GURU BIO: Serena Christie

Make America create again.

Some say that creativity is the most powerful form of intelligence, and I couldn’t agree more. Creative minds are what keep us thriving. Creative minds are the reason behind the art, beauty, and uniqueness in the world. And the best part about it? Every single person has the power and ability to create, the opportunities are infinitely limitless. Individuals have the aptitude to demonstrate their creativity in any way they please. As for me? I use a camera and a pen.

A quote that I find resurfacing my head each time I hold my eye to a viewfinder is, “Take a shot you could never recreate.” Drive the coast instead. Pull over when you know you’re already late. Hike to get to the very tip of that mountain. Do whatever it takes to get the shot you’re envisioning. In the end, you’ll always have the memory in a photograph. You won’t remember how long the detour took, you’ll remember the golden, glistening waves crashing along the shore as you’re driving. You won’t think about how you were five minutes late to that dinner, you’ll think of how you’ve never seen a sunset so astonishingly beautiful. You won’t regret those extra steps, you’ll look back and remember your one-of-a-kind birds-eye view of the whole city. You won’t look back at walking into your eight am lecture late, instead you’ll remember how confident you felt the rest of the day due to your perfectly assembled outfit, which seemed to be impossible to put together that morning.

Fashion to me is another way to express myself creatively, but instead in a physical aspect. I like to add unique pieces to my outfits to make them stand out amongst a crowd. In this outfit I pair my favorite Calvin Klein girlfriend jeans (rolled of course) with a deep-V olive green body suit. The body suit caught my eye because of the added twist of the backless detail, the color was also a major bonus. To make the outfit match my personality a little bit more, I added a studded belt and an off-orange detailed ascot (my newest full-blown obsession). To finish off this casual look I laced up my go-to felt lined Vans All Weather high tops, the colorful pattern detail is my personal favorite part of these sneakers. You’ll never see me leave the house without a set of rings that I always wear with my beaded flower bracelet, I’m a firm believer that accessories are a Fashionista’s best friend. So if you ever feel that you’re pressed for time just remember that your style is personal art, and there’s always time for art.

WHAT TO WEAR: Winter Street Style

Hey Fashionistas and Fashionistos! Winter is finally upon us and its time to dress to stay warm. Now that the temperature is dropping we can get out our coats and hoodies.

This Fashionisto, a senior at Southwest Community College  was walking in the rain while it was warm for this time of the year. Dressed in all black, he was rocking his black trench coat and paired it with black jeans and loafers. He wanted piece of his outfit to stand out, so he added a gold watch and cross necklace to finish the outfit.

Even though it was a typical day of classes for him, he still wants to look his best no matter what kind of weather. He likes for certain pieces of his outfit to stand out. He describes his style as flashy and matching. “I have a watch or necklace to match every outfit I have,” he said. “I started doing it with my older brother before he passed away so now I still do it for him.”

On a regular day, he enjoys wearing a plain or graphic T-shirt and jeans. This is a good look for an ordinary day out with friends or for hanging around at home.

Although it is an everyday outfit, he made it his own by adding personal touches to make it different from other people. It doesn’t matter if it is a regular day at school or a trip to the grocery store it is always a must to look your best.

STYLE GURU STYLE: These Boots Were Made For Strutting

Fashion can’t tie me down. I prefer to change my sense of style everyday. There is no telling how I will be dressed tomorrow and don’t even get me started on the next day. Yesterday, I woke up feeling like a bohemian sun goddess, and today I woke up and channelled a chic New York City girl boss. The first thought that comes to mind when I wake up is, “hmm, what shall I wear today?” After a quick visualization of all the clothes in my closet, I settle on a look. After strutting around campus for a few hours, I usually come to the conclusion that it’s time for an outfit change. I am a hard woman to please…

We can all agree that shopping is a mesmerizing experience. When I walk into my favorite stores, I am astonished by the many colors and patterns that I am dreaming of myself in. I use every excuse to justify a shopping trip; like a lunch date with my closest of friends, or a casual night out downtown. I came across these thigh high boots on one of my many shopping excursions and could not resist. As a Fashionista, I knew I had endless outfit options to pair with these trendy shoes—total Beyonce vibes. I paired my boots with a denim button up for a laid-back look. My other favorite piece in my closet has to be my simple,  black T-shirt dress. With a dress like this, you can totally dress it down for a casual look around campus or pair it with some bling and thigh boots for that glam look we all long for!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: We Ain’t Ever Getting Bolder

When looking to put together the perfect trendy, simple and casual outfit, you can never go wrong with denim. From skirts to jackets, denim has definitely branched out from being an ordinary pair of jeans. This Fashionista’s dress is the perfect everyday outfit for class, a date night or any occasion where you want to look nice in a casual way. The denim material makes the outfit less dressy and the overall-looking style gives a ‘90s throwback feeling. The front pockets keep the dress from being too plain and add a simple design to the attire. Adding a long sleeved black and white stripped shirt under the dress gives the outfit a pattern that is not the main focus of the look. Choosing this shirt as opposed to a solid color gives the style a trendier overall feeling. The high neck is necessary to balance out the difference from the shirt to the denim dress.

With a bold outfit like this, a bold pair of shoes is a must. This pair of black and white adidas sneakers matches the stripped long sleeved shirt perfectly and gives another fierce aspect to this Fashionista’s style. Choosing sneakers as opposed to sandals or boots in the same colors is a great option because it keeps the outfit easy and casual. Because the patterned shirt covers the Fashionista’s neck and wrists, adding jewelry would likely clash or go unseen. A useful accessory would instead be a pair of sunglasses. Covering your eyes in a bold outfit like this gives off a daring vibe in addition to probably keeping the sun out of your face on your walk to class. What better way to conclude a ‘90s-inspired outfit than with a scrunchie? This Fashionista chose a black scrunchie to blend in with her hair and match the stripes on her shirt since it is not a main focus of her look. Her natural-looking beach waves look normal and casual. Wearing an outfit like this any day will be effortless and comfortable and leave you feeling fierce and confident.

STYLE GURU BIO: Fredonia Dexter

Hi everyone! My name is Fredonia and I am excited to begin my internship with CollegeFashionista. I am currently a junior at AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic Academy) and I am majoring in acting. I was born and raised in California, where the sun is always shining, movies are made and the trends are ever-changing. I aspire to become a successful TV and film actress, as well as start a line of chokers and shirts. Although I have a serious passion for acting and the entertainment industry, at a young age I was (and still am) obsessed with fashion trends, sewing, fashion design and modeling.

Since I live in summer weather pretty much 365 days of the year, my style tends to be mainly casual or business casual depending on the event or my mood for the day. My outfit here is a typical casual day outfit for me. A simple logo muscle T-shirt and distressed dark jeans. I complemented them with beige booties and, of course, sunglasses. Simple, but perfect for a walk around the beach shops or day at the mall. What I love about this outfit is that its comfortable and easy to put together.

In my spare time, I love to read mystery novels, crochet and take photos of the scenery. I’m also a lover of YouTube and love to make videos, which is why I love living in California because when the weather’s nice, it’s great for a picnic at the beach or to have a fun random photo shoot in the park. With summer coming close to an end, wearing some jeans and a short sleeve top paired with a cute watch and flip flops is how I like to spend my day. Comfortable with a laid-back style.

Being a Cali girl calls for causal wear days, and I’m happy to say with the many jeans and shorts and breathable light fabric shirts that I own, living here is easy breezy.

Hey everyone! I’m Aly. I’m a senior at West Virginia University majoring in fashion merchandising and minoring in both business and communications (a lot I know). Although I will be spending this semester in Philadelphia, interning for a designer, I am excited to start my first (hopefully not last) semester of being a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista!

I swear by these four things: coffee, sunglasses, chokers and scrunchies and you will most likely never see me without at least two of them.

Secondly, I’m very basic (no I don’t mean the “drinking pumpkin spice everything and taking selfies with pool floats” kind of basic). I mean, my closet is basically filled with neutrals, such as black, white, nude etc. It does not matter what time of the year it is…you will always see me in black. I would say that I tend to pull toward the ’90s street style (because I mean who doesn’t love chokers?) but I also love boho and vintage clothing. It really depends on what my mood is that day. Most likely you’ll see me sporting old jeans and a T-shirt (especially if I didn’t have my coffee).

STYLE ADICE OF THE WEEK: Staple becomes Statement

I love my heels, I mean who doesn’t? They are the best accessory. I remember when I bought my first pair for eighth grade graduation. Man, I felt like a woman (kind of an ironic sentence, no?). Anyway I felt instantly more adult, more glamorous. I was a new lady! I have broken through that barrier of flats and sneakers only. It was like I unlocked a character on my favorite video game, I had discovered new land! Then this happened. On my way to get my diploma my heel got caught on my shoe and I tripped and my shoe fell off. In front of a whole auditorium. To make matters worse I was the last to be called so there was no one behind me to block the view of the absolute tragedy happening before 300 pairs of eyes! Embarrassed and lets not forget, shoeless, I stumbled up to accept my diploma. So this new discovery, the new sense of purpose I thought I had, this supposed unlocked video gamer character; betrayed me. 5 years later, I own about 15 pairs of high heels and have enjoyed my time in them, so the story did not completely ruin my relationship with these risky, but beautiful footwear. However, after that event my view on sneakers definitely was rejuvenated and I equally love them as much as I do my heels.

So “sneakers better than heels” strikes you as a bit of a stretch? Well, to me too. However, I do believe they can be equally stylish. And this Fashionista proves that statement true! Sneakers have made such a “comeback” as a shoe that can be just a rad as a heel. These sneakers add such an unexpected edge to the outfit! During the summer, sandals are the go to. So switching it up with a staple sneaker like the ones featured is a fun way to make your everyday outfit stand out. You will have an edgy, yet adorable vibe and everyone will love it!  Paring these with a distressed denim and simple T-shirt like our Fashionista did, truly made for a rugged and effortlessly cool look. Staples make for statements with the right accessories! Throw on a sleek backpack and some funky jewelry and you are off to make heads turn with your uniquely edgy outfit! Maybe I will follow my own advice and avoid a future visit with the pavement!

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK?: “You can be in trend while still being you!”

STYLE GURU STYLE: It’s All About the Airy Blue

I can’t believe it’s almost time to start a new semester. Summer has flown by, but it’s important to start buying pieces for your wardrobe that can transfer to fall. What better way to do that than by wearing fall colors, including my personal favorite, airy blue. Airy blue is one of Pantone’s colors for this upcoming fall.

Some of my favorite fashion show looks for this fall are from Balmain’s fall 2016 ready-to-wear show. I don’t know how you can’t love Balmain. From their gorgeous silhouettes, luscious fabrics and feminine colors they are by far my favorite designer this upcoming season. Kendall Jenner’s all blue ensemble inspired me to buy the top I’m wearing. Her blue suede thigh-high boots and feathers down her dress give airy blue a whole look. She showed that you can wear a monotone ensemble without it looking boring.

After looking at pictures from this fashion show, I was drawn towards this top. I loved the color along with the floral pattern. Besides the top being a pretty color, it’s also nice and light. I thought this would be a piece that I could also wear in the fall. If I pair it with jeans, a leather jacket and some leather booties I’ll be ready to go. However, since it’s still hot out, I wore it with some ripped jean shorts, my favorite kate spade new york purse and some of my favorite layering necklaces.
