Summer Staple Skirt

Summer is one of my favorite seasons, and now that we’re two months in, you probably know that it’s hotter than hot out. To keep cool in July, I like to minimize my layers as much as possible. I do this by wearing light and airy pieces that allow me to breathe on the warmer days. My favorite piece this summer is my early 2000s inspired denim skirt from Levi’s. I have been wearing this skirt a lot lately, and have found that it can be worn with many different styles. Additionally, this versatile skirt can be dressed up or down for many occasions. This denim skirt is one of my summer wardrobe staples but is a year-round basic.

I paired my staple skirt with a white lightweight cold shoulder blouse. The super thin fabric plus the cold shoulder holes are perfect for the July heat. My favorite part about this blouse is the ruffle detailing across the chest. I have always been a fan of ruffles, and I love that I am seeing them more in my favorite stores lately.

Then, I opted for a leather wrap-up sandal from Free People—I have linked a similar pair. I have been loving leather sandals lately and these have definitely been my go-to this season. However, the downside is the funky tan lines!

To pull the entire look together, I threw on my leather Shinola watch and my Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC Crossbody (aka the perfect crossbody bag). First of all, I love this watch because of its simplicity and timeless look. I find that I can wear it daily and that it matches most of my wardrobe. The Mini MAC has been one of my favorite bags for years now. Additionally, it is a perfect size and fits all of my on-the-go necessities such as wallet, sunglasses, and lip balm. This bag is perfect for everyday use.

The denim skirt has been one of my favorite comeback trends this season. Let me know how you style yours in the comments down below.

Chilling on a Rooftop in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is the perfect place to play with your style, because each part of the city has it’s own unique vibe. In Venice, Vans rule the world with skater-inspired style on every corner. In Beverly Hills, designer is the name of the game. Style Guru Cydney Critchlow is showing off her style in Downtown Los Angeles on the rooftop of The Standard Hotel.

Downtown Los Angeles is full of a mixture of working professionals and trendy millennials, which add a unique vibe to the city. The best place to grab a quick bite to eat, while checking out the city from above, is The Standard Hotel. Seeing a city from an elevated view gives you a whole new prospective.

Cydney’s outfit caught my eye with her slightly distressed look perfect for a hot California day. Her look inspired me to write a few tips on how to dress for chilling on a rooftop in Los Angeles.

Dress Light

It can get very hot on top of a roof with the summer sun beating down on you, so dress light. Whether that means light-colored clothing or a light fabric, dressing light is the perfect way to chill on a rooftop. Cydney’s top from American Eagle is perfect with its lightweight fabric and white color. Additionally, a white blouse or an off-the-shoulder top are other great options.

Wear Your Favorite Sunglasses

Not only are sunglasses super cool, but they are actually very practical for protecting your eyes against the sun. In fact, LA can be very sunny, which is why sunglasses are an absolute stable. I love a classic black pair or blue reflective shades as my sunnies of choice.

Be comfortable

Walking around a city all day can be pretty exhausting and hard on your feet, so wearing heels isn’t practical. Cydney paired her outfit with comfy slip-on sneakers from ALDO, the perfect shoe for city strolling and rooftop chilling. Try pairing your outfit with some comfy white Vans (the company actually got its start in Los Angeles). LA is all about that laid-back California vibe so you will fit right in!

Los Angeles is the perfect place to be this summer! Be prepared for those hot LA days by remembering to dress light, packing your sunnies, and staying comfortable. If you do manage to hit the West Coast this summer and happen to be around the downtown Los Angeles area, head up to the rooftop at The Standard Hotel. Not only is the food incredible, but the views of Los Angeles are amazing, especially when the morning smog burns off. I love LA!

The Ultimate Look for Those Simple Summer Nights

Summer is quickly approaching and temperatures are rising. My favorite clothing season is fall and it is hard to wear fall clothes during the summer. Luckily, summer nights are on my side.

When the sun goes down, the temperature cools making it easy to pull out my fall fashion favorites. This nighttime summer outfit is simple, yet a bit edgy as well. At the top, I have a gray Calvin Klein T-shirt that I absolutely love. It is comfortable, high quality, and basic. It is very versatile and I can wear it with many different outfits. Any gray T-shirt would work, though. Over my T-shirt, I have a plain black Nike hoodie just in case I get chilly when I go out.

At the bottom, I have one of my favorite pair of jeans. These light blue denim jeans have a nice stretch to them and the wash is perfect. They aren’t too heavy so they stay cool on my body and are comfortable throughout the night. On my feet are an essential pair of shoes I feel everyone should have. They are the “Sk8 High” Vans in “Black Suede”. I find myself reaching for these shoes day after day and they match with almost any outfit. Any black high-top shoe works, but these are just my favorites.

Last, but not least, the accessories. First, I have a simple camouflage bandana to add a little edginess to the outfit. On my wrist is a rose gold Michael Kors watch. It’s a small detail, but I think it works well with my skin tone and the colors in the outfit. A gold or silver watch would work as well. It just depends on personal preference and skin tone. Lastly, a simple shoestring I’ve used as a belt. This is becoming a huge trend in streetwear and I love it.

This is a great outfit for those cool summer nights. It is simple, versatile, and very customizable to what you already have. These are some of my favorite and essential pieces for going out at night during the summer.

Spring into Sakura

Spring is the season of final exams for students but it is also the time where cherry blossoms bloom. I guess it is nature’s way of providing such beautiful pink scenery to help students deal with the exam gloom. In this post, I would like to share the perfect outfit for sakura watching.

In this ever-changing weather that can be rainy and sunny, hot and cold, all at one time in spring, it is essential to have a coat that keeps you warm. Here I have an oversize gray coat on top of my favorite wardrobe staples, a simple black T-shirt and classic blue denim.

During exam time, a watch becomes a student’s necessity. I accessorized my outfit with a Gran Ben watch in navy blue from St. Vincent & Newport. This watch features a minimalist and contemporary design with Roman numerals. The sapphire crystal glass and Seiko quartz movement is the perfect timepiece of style and function that is suitable for any occasion. Accessories that have these slight accents in the detail create a personal unique statement that keeps you on time during exams and complements well with the whole outfit, all while keeping you smart and stylish.

Backpacks are also an important item among college students to keep your study materials and other essentials, thus it is also an opportunity to express your own unique fashion style. I styled my look with a black leather backpack from mywalit. The backpack is a combination of both sophistication and simplicity. It acts as a perfect addition to any outfit. This black Panama backpack is made with nappa leather making the backpack understated, luxurious, and sophisticated in aesthetics, yet lightweight and durable in function.

Finally, I completed my outfit with a pair of Lance shoes from Aureus. Taking inspiration from golf, this modern sleek footwear features a microfiber and canvas upper that is water resistant to tackle those spring water puddles—it’s all in the details! With the lightweight comfort and versatile color, this is the perfect footwear for students to have in their wardrobe to be worn from day to night with an elevated classy profile.

Take Your Cut-Off Shorts from Sloppy to Chic in Minutes

The hot summer months mean the inevitable return of a warm weather staple: cut-off shorts. No matter the trends they always seem to remain in everyone’s closet. Cut-offs are the perfect item to throw on and be ready to go in minutes. With a classic this casual though, it can seem daunting to dress them up and achieve a polished summer street style. But with a few simple pieces, you can style your cut-off shorts and take them from sloppy to effortlessly chic in minutes.

To dress up cut-off shorts, it is all about keeping it simple and pairing them with classic pieces. The cut-offs I am wearing are “Urban Renewal” from Urban Outfitters. My go to way to achieve a put together look is by styling cut-off shorts with a button down, statement watch, and slip-on sneakers

A linen button-down is the perfect lightweight shirt that you can button-up or down as much as you want and even layer! Rocking this shirt in navy, from Gap, is my favorite because it is a great, neutral alternative to black for the summer. I love accessories and when trying to polish to any look, you cannot  go wrong with a watch. I am obsessed with this Michael Kors statement piece.

I also added some aviator sunglasses, to shield my eyes from the sun’s rays! I love the way metallic accessories look against a bronzed glow (a fake one of course)!

To complete this look from head-to-toe, I slide into my blue, suede Steve Maddens. They are a super comfortable sneaker that create a more polished vibe than simple flip-flops would. Pairing this look with platform espadrilles or Birkenstock shoes would also be a great option.

To finish off the overall polished, yet casual look, I styled my hair with a one inch curling iron, leaving the ends out to achieve beachy waves. I kept my makeup bronzed and light to compliment my hair, as well my overall outfit and create my favorite polished summer street look incorporating cut-off shorts.

Off-Price, On Point

Creating high end, trendy looks that could go out of style in the next month can be tricky for college students. This is when I turn to off-price retailers such as T.J.Maxx and Marshalls. I know what you’re thinking, “I never find anything in there.” To be honest I only walk out of the store about 20 percent of the time with a bag in my hand. You have to check in at least once a week if not more if you want to get lucky! Off-price retailers are known for carrying high end brands and trendy look-a-like pieces for a fraction of the price you would find in department stores. Recently I have found brands like Free People, Joe’s, Romeo and Juliet, and even Lilly Pulitzer. You really can’t beat it!

My outfit is completely from T.J.Maxx from head to toe! I paired a baby pink off-the-shoulder top with ripped denim and lace-up heels. This off-the-shoulder top is perfect with jeans, shorts, or a cute skirt. I love how versatile and comfortable it is! I styled this top with ripped light denim Joe’s crops to make the look edgier and more casual. These jeans are great for warmer seasons because of how airy the holes make them and the light denim wash. Lace-up heels are perfect to make this look trendier. The chunky heel makes them surprisingly easy to walk in for a day on the town. No outfit is complete without accessories. I chose to pair this outfit with dainty gold jewelry and a statement watch. I found this Michael Kors wrap watch at T.J.Maxx for a steal and knew it would make the perfect summer accessory.

As frustrating as off-price retailers can be, they are worth stopping every week if you want to find a good deal. Plus, the hunt makes it that much more rewarding when you do find something you love.

What do you think of off-price retailers? Let me know in the comments below!

STYLE ADVICE: Modern Minimalist

Less is more. Minimalists may have affection for simple and clean lines, but it is all in the details that make this fashion style interesting. They focus on superior materials and understated luxury design as well as practical function and longevity of garments. This Fashionisto was spotted wearing a Topman navy blue parka coat, a classic wardrobe staple piece for spring’s rainy weather. With spring just around the corner, this coat is versatile balancing function and fashion; it can be easily dress up or down depending on what to put it with. In this look, he chooses to layered his outfit to stay warm against the chilly breezes that still pass through in this mild spring weather, and using cool and neutral tones can tone down his outfit to allow layering, creating a modern classy vibe yet still embody his personal minimalist style.

This Fashionisto starts off with a black pullover layered with a collared button-down shirt, which he wears a pair of black denim and finishes off with a pair of mid-top Patron sneakers from Aureus. Minimalists are conscious in design and modern materials that reflect that. Taking inspiration from golf, this modern sleek footwear features premium genuine nubuck leather upper that gives a luxurious look, polyurethane (PU) insole cushion with Am-Tech Sole Technology, direct injected sole construction that provides high durability. The simple style of these leather suede shoes are perfect for those who run daily errands and wants to combine comfort with an elevated style.

Another essential possession for men is a watch. He boldly accessories his outfit with a black mesh chrono watch from Gilchrist Watch Co. (formerly The Gentlemen’s Watch Company). This watch features a steel mesh strap with a sunburst dial and contrasting 3-hand analog display in red. The stopwatch and calendar window also maximizes a watch’s functionality. Statement pieces that have these slight accented details can accentuate your entire look and make you stay sharp, classy, and effortlessly cool whether you are suited up for a formal event or in your weekend wear.

Last but not least, backpacks are also an essential item among college students and an opportunity to express your fashion style. This Fashionisto sported a stylish black leather Panama backpack from Italian brand Mywalit. Made with fine smooth nappa leather that has a beautifully soft finish, this is the ideal backpack tailor-made for students to be worn from day to night in comfort and sophistication. Not only does it looks luxurious in aesthetics due to its timeless leather material, but this backpack is also lightweight and durable in function; it has multi-functional pockets in the roomy interior that can fit a laptop. The classy simple design and the premium practical quality ensure a modern yet upscale look perfect for any occasions from casual hangouts to professional work environment, and it perfectly aligns with the characteristics of a modern minimalist.

STYLE GURU STYLE: Comfortable (Yet Chic) Travels

Final exams are over and that means freedom (until September, at least). For me, it means travelling. My destination, this time, was Hong Kong. And, of course, that meant bringing items that were not only practical and useful, but also stylish and could make me look presentable and not the usual hot mess that I am.

One of my travel essentials is this Brevité backpack. I honestly swear by this Rucksack backpack when I travel. Designed by two brothers in Boston, this backpack combines two of their passions: design and photography.  It’s nothing flashy, no “bells or whistles,” but there are many pleasant surprises within this bag. The exterior is made of an extremely durable material, so I don’t have to worry about being overly rough with it en-route to my destination or worry about breaking whatever I’ve packed inside. Not only does it come with a removable camera insert to keep your DSLR protected, but there is also a DSLR lens cap holder on one of the backpack straps. As someone who can be quite clumsy, that holder really comes in handy when you’re out and about taking pictures and need some place secure to keep your lens cap as you click away. On top of all those goodies, the backpack is extremely spacious and full of secret pockets that give you easy access to whatever you stash in there, albeit chewing gum, a passport, or a boarding pass.

My favorite traveling outfit is a light sweater, 711 jeans from Levi’s, and a comfy yet still stylish pair of sneakers. I absolutely love this salt and pepper sweater from H&M. The rose gold zipper on the back adds a touch of style and sophistication to it. It’s a style item that’s quite versatile. You can wear it with jeans and sneakers, but you can also pair it with slacks and some adorable nude heels for a meeting at work (yes, I’ve actually done that).

Accessory-wise, I kept it simple. I always have my Apple watch on me, as it acts as a great activity tracker and also lets me know when I get a Facebook or WhatsApp message or phone call on my phone. I used to dislike wearing bracelets. At work I often have to type or write something, and I found that bracelets got in the way a bit. However, since I received this wonderful crystal bracelet gift from a family member, I’ve been wearing it non-stop. I tend to think of it as a good luck charm of sorts. Some prefer a lucky rabbit’s foot, I prefer a bracelet. It also complements any outfit perfectly, giving it that finishing touch.

Some people find traveling tiring, but I love it. Not only do you get to experience a new country and a new culture, but you also get to experience new and different fashion styles that remain comfortable while still looking chic. Happy travels, my friends!

ALL IN THE DETAILS: A Little Goes a Long Way

We all know the phrase “less is more,” and in the fashion world, less can be perfection. Little details in an outfit like jewelry, shoes, and makeup complete an outfit and make it unique to the model wearing it. We all have our own go-to accessories that look good with every outfit and makes the Fashionista/o cool, calm, and collected. These outfits are usually simple, classy, and emphasize the incredible details that help create an effortless look.

Certain looks are all about the details, especially this Fashionista’s! She is rocking her favorite top that she snagged while across the pond in London. The blouse has huge trendy ruffles with mesh shoulders and collar. It’s the Twist X Turn top from Topshop. She pairs the outfit with cream linen pants from Ann Taylor. Now, for the accessories… The shoes add a pop of color to the outfit. She got her turquoise lace-up heeled sandals from for 15 dollars—bargain! Her watch is a limited edition Fossil watch matched with her gold hoop earrings and ear cuffs. She completes the outfit with a low bun and a french braid crown. She added a little teal eyeliner to match her shoes and a little highlighter on her cheeks to make the outfit fierce!

This outfit is perfect for any special occasion from a bridal shower to a fancy brunch in New York City.  All the small details and choices we make while picking the perfect outfit are super important. Details and accessories tie an outfit together. One simple necklace, shoe, or purse can make your outfit pop and make you look rad. From the ruffled detailed blouse to the turquoise heeled sandals, anyone can create a similar unique look. Next time you are looking to make a statement at a special occasion, don’t forget, it’s is all about details, details, details!

STYLE GURU STYLE: Spring Simplicity

In my opinion, spring is the worst season to dress for. You walk out of your apartment in a sweater and jeans, but by two o’clock in the afternoon, you wish you would of worn a tank top and shorts. With spring on the horizon, your closet needs versatility.

There is no better item to be versatile with than denim. Denim goes with everything and anything, but can also be dressed up or dressed down. This denim jumper is absolutely perfect for spring. It can be practically worn in all seasons, which makes it an investment piece for sure. I paired my denim jumper with a simple, cream linen shirt. The jumper is full of patches, rips, and an unfinished hem, so I wanted to add a simple top underneath to really make those details stand out.

Athletic footwear has been seen as one of this year’s hottest trends. Athletic shoes are paired with almost any type of outfit. I love how the fashion world is moving more towards comfort, including sweats, athletic footwear, and oversize hoodies. I added my Adidas Superstars with this outfit to give it a more casual look. These shoes are one of my prized possessions because I got them in London, England and have yet to see them anywhere in the United States. The overall uniqueness really popped out to be with the two-toned cream and the fine hair behind the three stripes.

One last small detail I added to my outfit was my watch. I am always attracted to accessories that are effortless, yet stand out. This watch will go with any outfit and give it that extra push of sophistication. It has a real marble face with a solid gray strap, which gives it the ability to look professional or casual.

Keep it light and fun this spring. This is the time to get out of those dark, depressing colors of winter and step out in a colorful new style.
