How to Keep up With This Year’s Fashion Trends

Fashion is interesting because it is always repeating. We go back in time, decade by decade, and pick out our best looks from that era. Whether you’re an early adopter, the early majority, or a laggard, you’ve most likely seen recurring styles. The summer trends of 2017 consist of bright pops of color, mom jeans, raw edges, and gingham—so much gingham.

Black and white are colors that you should always keep as basics in your closet, but this summer we’ve branched out on our fashion and embraced accent colors. We are slowly letting go of our all-black wardrobe, and heading towards the ’70s look. We’ve already been seeing a lot of bold yellows and reds as our fashion colors, then we have pink and greens as accent colors. Art exhibits, buildings, street style, psychology, music, movies, and so many more things inspire us every day. This is how we get our current colors.

This next trend was taken from the ’90s: mom jeans.

The ’90s started coming back last year. This year we’ve already started looking back at the ’70s, but some ’90s classics have managed to stick around. With shows like Friends still taking part in our daily dose of TV, it’s easy to look at Monica Geller or Rachel Green and think yes, I want those pants. These mom jeans go with almost everything, so it’s hard to let them go.

The next trend is gingham, this summer’s hottest trend. This one is easy to find out on the streets of the city. If you own anything gingham, keep it, because this trend will be sticking around for a while. You can wear a gingham dress, bathing suit, top, pants, you name it, and it looks great on everyone.

Hopefully, now you know a few simple ways to spot the upcoming and current trends.

Sunshine and White

Styling for summer can be hard. Trying to stay cool while also being cute can be tricky, but flowy and lightweight clothing is key. Yellow and white are great for this season and pair very nicely together. Our Fashionista here has perfectly demonstrated how to rock this fun color combo.

Few people are able to pull off anything yellow simply because they don’t know how to correctly wear the color. This muted shade of yellow complements her olive skin tone and dark hair, as well as the white pants. The material of the top is lightweight, meaning that it won’t create too much body heat in this ridiculously hot summer weather.

The pants in this outfit are fabulous. The white pants give the overall look a lighter and more appropriate feel for the season. Wide pant legs tend to be extremely flattering on everyone, but especially shorter girls. They give the illusion of longer and taller legs while also dressing up the outfit. The tie belt adds a little extra detail to the otherwise plain and simple pants.

Brown wedges are a wardrobe essential. They are classic and can turn any casual outfit into more of a dressy one. The straps on this particular pair are cute and add detail. Not only do the wide leg pants make this Fashionista’s legs look longer, but paired with the wedges, she looks even taller. They pair together very well.

I love the subtle jewelry in this outfit. The metal tone of the necklace is very “in” right now. It’s delicate yet chunky at the same time. The watch is cute and simple, and it pairs greatly with the look.

This is outfit is a great look for the summer. Whether it’s to a nice lunch with your girlfriends or for a date night dinner out, this is a versatile outfit for the whole season.

The Perfect Look to Express Yourself At Pride 2017

Pride Marches can be seen all over the country during the month of June, which is National Pride Month. You may have seen coverage of them on the news or inspiring photos on your Instagram feed. These marches celebrate the LGBTQ community in whatever town they take place and can range from a few hundred to tens of thousands of people gathering to celebrate this community in their hometowns. At these parades in bigger cities, you’ll usually see people decked out in all sorts of rainbow attire and different kinds of glitter, sparkles, and gemstones. For smaller towns, people usually tone it down, like this Fashionista.

She chose to go minimalistic with her look, but still, she embraced the colorful nature of pride. She added simple glitter and rhinestones above her eye to accentuate her face. This Fashionista topped off her look with bright red lipstick and moved on to her cute outfit!

This Fashionista played with color without embracing every color of the rainbow. She stands out in the crowd in this bright yellow off-the-shoulder top that matches her yellow nails perfectly. These shoulder-baring tops are one of the hottest trends of the summer. She pairs the look with a plain brown belt and simple denim shorts to create a casual and comfy vibe. On her feet, she wears simple white canvas shoes that are perfect for walking the 10-block parade that happened before meeting at the center of downtown where the main events of the parade were set up.

Pride is an event designed to let people express themselves and celebrate their individuality. Self-expression is best seen through our clothing choices, so be bold and true to yourself with whatever you do!

My Summer Fashion Essentials

The summer months can be hectic for every Fashionista.  In the last few weeks, I have been extra busy adjusting to post-graduation life and applying to jobs. I also just got back from a three-week trip to Europe. During this time, I’ve noticed a few staple pieces I’ve been grabbing frequently from my closet.

One color I’ve been drawn to this summer is yellow. More specifically, I have become obsessed with mustard yellow and chartreuse. I’m wearing the Deep Plunge Strap Detail Cami from ASOS in chartreuse. I love this top because its color gives my outfit life, and makes it stand out. Chartreuse and mustard yellow are the perfect go-to colors for summer, and they can be seen everywhere right now. The Cami in Pleat With Ruffle Neck from ASOS is another top I love in this color. This is a great blouse for a night out or dinner with friends.

Another essential summer piece for me is a denim skirt. I have found myself in a denim skirt almost every day over the last few weeks. In this post, I’m wearing the Denim Low Rise Pelmet Skirt in Bleach Wash with Rips from ASOS. I love denim skirts because they are easy to throw on whether you’re going to the beach or the store, and they dress up an outfit.

My essential accessories this summer include a hair scarf, sunglasses, a double buckle belt, and a fringe bag. I love a hair scarf because my hair is usually very messy in the summer, whether from the beach or just rolling out of bed. This accessory takes my messy bun from bedhead to cute beach bun. I also love this accessory because it can double as a neck scarf, which is a popular trend right now. My sunglasses are the Ray-Ban round metal sunglasses in gold/green, which I never leave the house without.

A belt is a great way to dress up any look and pull it all together. This double buckle belt helps to keep my blouse tucked in, and it highlights my waist. It also adds glamour to the look with its gold buckles. Fringe is my go-to when looking to add more detail to my look. I have been reaching for a fringe bag all the time lately because it brings a bohemian flair to my outfits, which is something I always like to incorporate into my personal style.

For shoes, there is one pair I can’t live without this summer: my black slides. The black slides I’m wearing in this post are the London Rebel Flat Mule Sandal from ASOS. Black slides can be found anywhere right now, making it easy to pick up a pair. I love these sandals because they are comfortable, easy to throw on and add chicness to an outfit. This combination makes them my essential shoe for summer.

Outfits that Beat the Heat in NYC

There’s nothing like direct advice from a native New Yorker about how to beat the heat during these hot summer days in the city while remaining true to your style. So stop worrying about the hot summer days, the sticky, and humid air ruining your summer style because the outfits I’m about to point out are as cool as it gets. The photographs all incorporate iconic New York City culture in order to further highlight my origins to New York. The New York City yellow taxi cab isn’t the only yellow we should be spotting in the city. Hues of yellow in your summer wardrobe will help you stand out amongst the bright colored days.

Show off those shoulders and catch a tan as you walk the streets of New York City with a yellow string crop top. Pair the top with your favorite pair of white denim shorts or a white denim skirt. The simplicity of the colors will not only highlight a confident and trendy look but will keep you cool from the burning sun and humid air. Accessorize the look with your favorite glasses and velvet choker.  And if you’re feeling daring: top off the look with a bold rep lip. The outfit calls for attention yet simplicity all at once.

For the next outfit let’s work a bit backwards. Starting with sneakers, because in New York you are either hopping subways, hailing at cabs, or walking to every destination. Stan Smiths by Adidas are amongst one of the most commonly used sneakers because of their versatility, comfort, and style.  Bring out those stylish high-waisted shorts you’ve been wanting to flaunt. Sport your hair up in a bun or in a low messy bun; personally one of my favorites, it allows you to appear graceful yet remain casually sporty. Although we can try to beat the sweat with dozens of products, try to embrace the natural you. Makeup in the heat can get messy so try to highlight your lips and eyes, parts of the face that tend to sweat less. You can either top your look off with a natural or bold lip. Mascara and eyeliner are more likely to stay on, so don’t be afraid to create attention to those eyes.

Mellow for Yellow—The Color You Won’t Believe You Can Look Good In

Yellow, also known as the color between green and orange in the color rainbow, complementary to blue. Color ripe like an egg’s yolk, lemons, or the center of a daisy. According to Pantone, the color of the season is yellow. So now that summer’s here, it’s time to replace your black with your yellows. I have always loved the color yellow but never expected it to be the color of summer 2017. Maybe you are not completely comfortable in an all-out yellow head-to-toe outfit, but why not add a little to an outfit?

Rocking Glasses

Start off with a vision. Yellow, clear glasses are a way to go. From polarized to clear, the way to go this summer is one piece PC lens rimless ultra-bold colorful mono block sunglasses. These futuristic glasses are a good accessory to add to any ordinary outfit. Whether it’s yellow or another color, these glasses are the future.

Out With Plain Denim

Since a blue is a complementary color of yellow it’s good to add in some denim with your yellow. A fun easy way to change up old jean shorts is adding some patches or embroidery. This season, add the decals whether you are going for a nice walk, a festival, or just hanging out in your home town.

Top to Top

Off-the-shoulder, ribbed, and white are a great way to tie together the embroidery design on the shorts. This current top and daisy shorts are a perfect pair for the summer with the breeze on your shoulders and wind in your hair.

Never Go Wrong With Accessories

To tie this whole look together, I added in little details of yellow everywhere. I paired the look with a daisy choker since the neckline is straight across. I also paired my look with a matching bracelet and white daisy socks. Pearl earrings were the perfect touch to keep it casual and classy.

Shoes

Keep the shoe choice simple with Converse or any other white sneakers, such as slip-on sneakers. You could even go simple with a sandal.

The Rival of the Denim Mini Skirt

In fashion, I love how everything comes full circle. Major fashion trends have a tendency to make their way back in our wardrobes. When thinking of the early 00s’, I tend to think of trends like velour tracksuits, denim mini skirts, and tattoo choker necklaces. Denim mini skirts were a huge part of the 00s’. Almost every girl, no matter what age, wore them with brand logo T-shirts (Abercrombie and Hollister—don’t lie you owned a couple), polos and trucker hats. They were widely worn in the early 00s’ and then were not seen much, that is, until now. In 2017, all of these trends are widely popular again. Many girls have dusted off their velour tracksuits, repurchased tattoo chokers and the resurrection of denim skirts has occurred. And I for one, couldn’t be happier.

Almost anything can match nicely with denim, which makes it one of the most wonderful materials. Almost everyone’s day-to-day wardrobe contains denim shorts and pants. Now, another option opened to us—skirts. I love denim skirts because they give an outfit a little more of a unique look than denim shorts or pants would.

How I Styled a Denim Skirt

The denim skirt I picked had a different look to it, compared to what was worn in the 00s’. A denim pencil skirt with rips along it gives the simple look a little edge. This skirt goes well with almost any top, which is a very nice feature. I decided to pair it with a mustard yellow ruffled crop top. However, it would look great with a simple black camisole for a more casual look or, it can be dressed up with a nice blouse. I kept the accessories to a minimal, with a delicate necklace and neutral sandals.

How I Styled a Pastel Turtleneck for the Summer

With summer approaching and the weather changing, it can be hard to find something to accommodate the climate. As someone who loves layers and juxtaposition, I thought it would be fun to wear a bright transitional outfit and add some color to my day. I decided to style my outfit around a lightweight pastel yellow turtleneck.

Turtlenecks are always fun and they are great for layering. I knew that in the daytime it would be warm, but as the day declined so would the temperature and I did not want to be a victim of the weather. I decided to think outside of the box and pair my turtleneck with a distressed pair of denim overall shorts. In my opinion, you can never go wrong with denim, and the distressed overalls were edgy enough without being overpowering.

To add an extra pop of color I decided to tie a flannel around my waist. Flannels are classic and also great transitional pieces. This particular pattern had hints of yellow that I feel complemented the turtleneck very well. The primary color scheme was whimsical and really allowed me to stand out from the crowd.

I decided to go very neutral when it came to my shoes. I paired this outfit with a pair of black Dr. Martens and black crew socks. The boots added a hint of grunge which was nice. As far as accessories, I wore pearl bracelets and my signature leather bands, which I think really helped complete the outfit. They were very dainty and minimal, and the pearls and leather were a great way to play with masculine and feminine pieces. The look made me feel great and I really enjoyed the colors. I feel like this outfit was a perfect representation of the day and can be worn from day to night.

It’s always fun to think outside of the box and take the risk. Often times, people avoid certain pieces or colors due to fear, but where’s the fun in that? Be bold, and try something you have been nervous about or wear a color you have been shying away from and just have fun.

WHAT TO WEAR: Summer Brunch

Summer is officially here! What better way to celebrate a semester of hard work than brunch dates to catch up with friends and family? Some say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but brunch is the perfect excuse to get some extra sleep and get dressed up. As a brunch lover myself, I know that half the fun of a brunch date is choosing the perfect outfit and taking Insta-worthy pictures with your food. Summer brunch outfits are all about being eye-catching and effortlessly stylish while still being comfortable. Take a few tips from this Fashionista for the perfect brunch outfit!

The key to a chic yet casual brunch look is the mixing and matching of casual and dressy pieces. You can never go wrong with stripes, floral, bold patterns, or bright colors for a killer brunch look. I love how she paired her lemon-patterned navy and white pants with her yellow bag for a pop of color that ties the summer theme of the whole outfit together. The white ruffle blouse adds a touch of femininity and movement to the look. She accessorized the outfit with a straw floppy hat that gives off summer vibes and silver jewelry like her necklace, her Folli Follie watch, and her Swarovski ring. A straw hat or sunglasses are perfect for blocking out that summer sun while still being stylish. She finished off the look with comfy brown sandals that are perfecting for walking off those calories post-brunch.

This summer brunch outfit can easily be transitioned from casual to formal by adding heels and a dressy blazer to elevate the look. This outfit is a great example of a carefree and chic summer brunch look that will be the envy of all your fellow brunch-goers; just be sure to wear loose clothing that will leave space for all that food! Brunch on, Fashionistas!
