TREND: Back In Black

Wearing an outfit with all black pieces often gets a bad rap. Although it is known as one of the most flattering colors, the hue suffers from labels such as “depressing” and “gothic.” But wearing black doesn’t have to conjure such ominous images. When done right, an all-black outfit looks polished, elegant, and unequaled in the sophistication department. This Fashionista knows the power of black basics. The elongated length of her Eddie Bauer jacket is ideal for braving a Syracuse winter, and her black pants keep the look sleek and monochromatic. Her red Hollister sweater adds the perfect punch of color, and her Rhododendron pashmina scarf incorporates a chic pattern into the outfit. Her Express belt and Steve Madden boots top off the black-themed style with structure and trendiness. To steal the look, try The North Face’s Metropolis Parka in black for a durable yet dressy approach to winter apparel. Denim is another great way to add black to any outfit. Look for sleek, skinny styles, like Forever 21’s Fab Skinny Black Jeans, to avoid looking like a ‘90s throwback. Shoe-wise, black boots have never been so ubiquitous in the fashion world. Go for a bold over-the-knee style like Lucky Brand’s Gai Over The Knee Boots (available at Macy’s), or keep your footwear low and luxe with kelly & katie’s Crystal Bootie (available at DSW).

Hint: When rocking the all-black trend, it’s important to keep your outfit streamlined. Because the color is so dark, wearing baggy clothes will end up looking like a big, dark cloak. Try high-waisted belts and skinny styles to keep the look structured and flattering.) Happy shopping!

TREND: Back in Black

It’s almost been six weeks since school last started. Time is flying by and many of us are heading into those wonderful little things us college students like to call midterms. Of course, I cringe at the word, but the fact remains that we all have to try and retain as much information as we can. Though all my professors are giving valuable information in their areas, one of the biggest gems of information that has stuck out in my mind is something my professor said about fashion, “This city is great because in the cold Chicagoans will forgo fashion for comfort.” And while it’s not quite reached the frigid temperatures that Chicago is infamous for, we are beginning to gain glimpses of wool scarves, comfy sweatpants, fleece hoodies and even those great suede boots we women call Uggs, and men call ugly. So I suppose yes, we Chicagoans like our comfort. What I like even more than comfort though is looking chic while being comfy.

One of the great things about fall is being able to wear black as much as you want without looking like a thief. And what’s great about wearing black is that there are so many options. And many options means being able to look great while feeling comfy in the cold weather. This Fashionista is the perfect example of chic meeting comfort. Her look is simple but classy, very reminiscent of ultra -classic Audrey Hepburn. The outfit is not overdone, a key to looking chic. Her cardigan is great for warding off the chilly winds but what I like best is the embellishment around the collar. Embellishments are the perfect way to spice up a classic piece like a cardigan or a blazer. Pairing the sweater with black flats keeps the look unified, but the more simple style of the shoes keeps the focus up on top. The result is a clean, fresh, classic look that rivals even the chicest of Hollywood stars.

Hint: Pair a black cardigan or blazer with black skinny jeans and a pair of colorful flats/embellishedor heels for a fun twist on a classic look.

Every Fashionista knows that you can't go wrong sporting a classic black outfit with a funky or flattering silhouette. I spotted these three ladies chatting and laughing by Edward's Parade and noticed the acute similarities and vast differences in their ensembles. Each of them rocks skinny jeans or fitted leggings in dark shades with loose shadowy tops and fresh flats in contrasting neutral colors. The Fashionista on the right cinches her loose black button down with a brown leather belt which adds unique flair and a sexy shape to her outfit. She adds bold leopard flats to spruce up the simple and chic ensemble. The Fashionista in the middle dawns a stunning black and gold top with black mesh at the cleavage which lets skin peak through in a sultry but tasteful manner. She adds cozy brown moccasins to dress down her striking top. Finally, the Fashionista on the right keeps it cute and casual in a charcoal sweater with a beautiful gold pendant. She rocks white t-strap flats which match her tote bag.

These girls demonstrate that bright colors and crazy patterns are superfluous if you choose great silhouettes and stunning accessories.

Hint: Find fall flats at Dolce Vita , dark wash denim at Nordstrom, and trendy tops at Shopbop.

As the month of June comes to a close, many of us are looking forward to the barbecues, bonfires, and pool parties that will occur on the Fourth of July holiday. When scouring your wardrobe for the perfect ensemble for the occasion, your eyes will probably immediately focus on anything red, white, or blue. After all, why not? Red, white, and blue are the colors that perfectly exemplify American patriotism, the very thing that the Fourth of July celebrates! It makes perfect sense. However, one of the cardinal rules of being a true blue Fashionista is thinking outside of the box and wearing outfits that may or may not defy fashion boundaries. If defying fashion boundaries isn’t your thing, why not just make a subtle statement, adding just enough pizzazz to really make you stand out? In my opinion, a simple, yet trendy example of this is wearing a classic black top and accessorizing it with bold jewelry, shoes, sunglasses, a belt, or a handbag.

This Fashionista definitely has the right idea. As you can see, she wore a chic, peasant-style black and white top with skinny jeans. Then, she accessorized this simple look with a large, black patent leather bag and beaded gladiator sandals. She completed the outfit with black sunglasses and silver jewelry. You can mimic her style by wearing a black top, like this classic black tube top, and dark-washed jeans, like these. Both of those pieces are from Urban Outfitters. Then, pick out accessories to compliment your outfit. Try a statement-making necklace, like this one from Forever 21, or a pair of platform heels, like these from Charlotte Russe (these are actually on sale right now!). If all else fails, nothing completes an outfit better than a really unique and fabulous handbag. I really like the one that this Fashionista is carrying. It’s very trendy, stylish, and also versatile and practical. As college students, we all know how important a practical bag is, and this one definitely does the trick. This Cole Haan bag is on the pricier side, but if you are willing to splurge, it is definitely something you can complete this look with.

If you are looking for more ideas on how to make this trend work in your own wardrobe, check out this post on Glamour.com. It shows you how to pair bright colors, such as blue or red, with your black summer pieces. I especially like the picture of reality TV star Roxy Olin’s outfit; she pairs a plain black dress with some seriously fierce electric blue heels and a matching necklace. If you are looking for a more subtle way to accentuate your outfit, channel this Fashionista from campus and play up your ensemble with just the right amount of accessories. This is definitely a trend that you should test out at your Fourth of July barbecue this summer. While everyone, including myself, loves the classic color combination of red, white, and blue, try thinking outside of the box and give this look a chance! Black is a color that flatters every body type and will never go out of style. Use this Fashionista’s outfit and the pictures of the outfits on Glamour.com, mentioned above, and you will definitely stand out (in a good way!) at your summer barbecues, bonfires, and parties.

TREND: Back in Black

I know I touched on the rocker look last week but this Fashionistos 80s inspired punk rock front man garb was just too good not to capture. Leather is hitting our College Fashionistas/os' campuses across the country and I am loving every minute of it! So if you haven’t invested in this fabulous fall trend, it’s about time to jump on the bandwagon and invest in some great leather (or pleather if you wish!).

For you fellow Fashionistos ready to take the plunge, try this Standard Waxed Bomber from Urban Outfitters. Fashionistas if you haven’t purchased a leather jacket yet, take a look at this Patched Leatherette Jacket from Bebe.

Style On,

Katie
