TREND: Denim on Denim

Jeans are a college student's staple seen everywhere and yet, that's why this Fashionisto caught my eye. His layers of denim stood out.

This Fashionisto keeps it simple with dark wash jeans, a striped t-shirt, denim jacket, and white sneaks. His rich leather messenger bag provides nice color contrast to boot. Although each element of his outfit is simple, they are each well cut and rich in color.  Details like the patch pockets on his jacket and the white leather of his shoes gives his look a modern americana feel. He gives classic a new twist by using jeans as the bottom and top layer of his ensemble.

Hint: The trick to wearing denim on denim comes down to the silhouette of the items. Keep items pared down and slim fitting so that the look doesn't overpower you. Wear bootcut jeans with a well cut modern jacket. The hues can be similar in shade or you can go for contrasting denim to create a bolder look.

The answer to keeping denim interesting seems to be: add more!

TREND: Denim on Denim

Remember when your mom used to dress you up in all denim from head to toe circa 1990? Well maybe its true when they say, "Mother knows best". Denim on denim has been an upcoming trend from last spring and continuing into this winter. Whether you are rocking the denim vests, the ripped straight legged jean pants or the very popular jean legging, this friendly fabric is timeless. But there is no doubt that it is hard to pull off and you must place it with the right accessories and clothing items.

This Fashionista shows that she knows all the tricks to pulling this fashion trend off right. She starts off perfectly by pulling a shrunken chambray boy shirt over a simple black tee. You can steal if from your boyfriend (or at least say you did) or purchase it from many retails places. Adding a second denim to a shirt denim is risky, but choosing the right shade is key. This Fashionista chooses extremely dark denim that may even come off a black to some people. These top shiny fitted denim jeans complete the denim on denim look by pulling it all together and not making the outfit too matchy-matchy. The accessories top off the entire outfit from the rocker chick studded boot to the must-have Ray-Ban wayfrayer.

TREND: Denim on Denim

This week we call for a double dose of denim! This fall it has been all about the denim-on-denim look, and recently I have started seeing this look around the University of Minnesota campus. Now many of you may laugh when I suggest sporting the Canadian tuxedo, but if you learn how to pick the right denim, this casual look could be a great addition to your fall wardrobe!

So what is the trick to rocking this look? It is all about mixing the fabric weights and the washes to achieve that perfect balance. You don't want your look to be all one color and dimension, so always keep these two factors in mind when searching for the perfect pieces. For example, you could pair a light-wash chambray shirt, like this one from Forever 21, and pair it with medium-wash skinny jeans. I would recommend a darker-wash denim in a medium weight to make sure you have the perfect contrast.

I choose to photograph today's Fashionista because I love how she twisted the original concept of denim on denim. Instead of using traditional blue denim, she paired her chambray shirt with a pair of skinnys with a gray-ish hue. If you are feeling audacious enough, try a pair of jeans like these from Urban Outfitters. They resemble the gray hue in this fFshionista's jeans and would take this look to a whole new level!

Hint: if you love the boos as much as I do, they are by Minnetonka!

TREND: Denim On Denim

Well, it’s that time of the year again. It’s the time when Fashionistas and Fashionistos from all over come back to Bloomington for the Indiana University school year. This means seeing old friends, going to new classes, and of course—strutting the best style. One style making its way onto the streets of Bloomington this fall is denim on denim. While some may be skeptical about this current trend, it is obvious from this Fashionisto that it is definitely a look that can be pulled off day or night.

Spotted on the breezeways of an IU residence hall, this Fashionisto is sporting a denim shirt, basic white tee, and classic denim jeans. To add a bit of flare, he even threw in a pair of fresh white sneakers and vintage Ray-Ban wayfarers. This look can be recreated easily by pairing a denim jacket or shirt with a simple pair of jeans. It usually works best if the denims are two different tones of blue, to add a contrast in color. While this Fashionisto is clearly ready for a night out on the town, this same outfit can also work well for a chilly fall day in Bloomington.

If you like the look of this trend, check out this classic denim shirt and pair of jeans from Levi’s. The tee this Fashionisto is wearing is plain white, but don’t be afraid to add some stripes or graphics to the mix, such as this tee from Urban Outfitters.

So Fashionistas and Fashionistos alike, remember, denim on denim is GOOD when matched with the right basics to fit the outfit. This trend works for guys and girls, so break out the blue, and say hello to fall fashion!
