TREND: Drab to Fab

Looking for a way to spruce up that bland, white graduation dress that you thought you’d never wear again? It’s probably been collecting dust in your closet all summer, and you’re probably feeling pretty guilty that it’s going to waste. Well, this week’s Fashionista lends and easy solution to that problem. By adding a casual cropped jacket and layering simple summer accessories, this Fashionista takes that formerly drab look out of her closet and onto the streets.

The key to dressing down is to keep it simple; stick with classic accessories like this Fashionista’s wide, woven brown belt, cinched at her waist to create a subtle curve in her figure. Try adding a necklace, or even a statement ring- a simple dress such as this one makes it easy to accessorize without going overboard. Her cropped jacket is a key piece in this ensemble; the length is perfect, emphasizing her waist while still allowing the delicate detail on the hem of the dress to grab some attention as well. And, as always, add some Ray Bans- you can never go wrong adding this classic look to an outfit.

Hint: For a classic look like this Fashionista, try this Levi’s classic trucker jacket- it’s fitted enough to hug your figure, but still has room to move around. If you’re feeling daring (and in the mood to splurge), try this Friend of Mine leather jacket with fringe.

TREND: Playful Pencil Skirt

As many college students are gearing up for their internships, they are beginning to replace their jeans and t-shirts with the essential professional attire. Instead of going straight to “business black”, many fashionistas are wearing more eye-catching color palettes and patterns. Summer is a time to experiment with playful designs and bright hues and there is nothing wrong with working these trends into your work style. Just because you may have a boring desk job does not mean that your style has to be boring too!

I spotted this Fashionista heading to her car to start the first day of her summer internship. She replaced the classic “business black” attire with this vibrant and cheerful canary yellow pencil skirt. It is so easy to take a simple pencil skirt and turn it into a stand-out piece! She downplayed the rest of her outfit by wearing a timeless white button up shirt and pointed toe black pumps; allowing the skirt to really pop and become the main focal point. She accessorized with a silver snake-like bracelet which adds another unique touch to her look.  You can brighten up your work day with this yellow ruffled pencil skirt or this blue pleated pencil skirt.  If you want to take more of a risk and try a pattern, check out this animal printed pencil skirt from Ann Taylor.

Hint: When choosing to wear a bold and bright piece of clothing, remember one thing: keep it simple! Try not to mix too many bold patterns or colors.
