TREND: In with the Old

This week’s CollegeFashionista is reminding us all of things that we once loved, and may possibly be starting to neglect in favor of this season’s trendiest trends. I fear that many of us may have to dig up some old favorites from under all of this season's sheer blouses, lace shirts and maxi skirts. Consider this a friendly review of some old trends that are undoubtedly still trendy!

Everyone is raving about maxi-skirts this summer. Lest we forget the basic tight black mini? This Fashionista is rocking the black basics; the skirt is just-the-right-tight and serves as a great base for her printed jersey tank. The graphic print on this tank top mimics the texture of lace and gives the shirt a little pop with the black-and-beige contrast. We love this loyal salute to the mini and the graphic tank!

However, this CollegeFashionista’s shoes show that she is clearly keeping up-to-date with this season’s hottest trends in footwear. These black Toms keep the look casual. The Row (coveted brand from our favorite A-list twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) has paired up with Toms Shoes to create three new groups of shoes that are just to-die-for! The Stacey Black Herringbone woven hemp shoes (like the ones this Fashionista is sporting) will be a sure-fire investment for any CollegeFashionista just in time for school.

Hint: Keep things simple and stay trendy by mixing old favorites with new trends. This Fashionista as remained loyal to the mini-skirt and graphic tank, but paired them with a pair of Toms. Try pairing your favorite worn out concert tee with boyfriend blazer and mix the old with the new!

TREND: In with the Old

Looking to the past can provide the most daring source of inspiration for the modern Fashionista. Today, the vintage look, which reflects styles from the past, is becoming an increasingly popular trend. You no longer have to scour through thrift stores or your grandma’s closet to achieve this look. Nowadays, designers are intentionally producing garments with a dated feel.

This week’s Fashionista flaunts a blast from the past in her ‘60s –inspired outfit. This Fashionista could be a classic housewife in her sleeveless ruffle top and yellow A-line skirt. To add a modern touch, however, she pairs her ensemble with a matching, chic yellow purse and white kitten wedges – stylish, yet era-appropriate. Simple earrings keep her look classic and clean-cut.

While this Fashionista opted to channel the ‘60s, every decade has its own unique trends that can be stylishly replicated. Asymmetrical shapes, floral prints, and lace pieces are all ways you can incorporate the vintage trend into your look. You can chose to jump into character to achieve your decade-warped outfit, or just pick one accessory to play up a small memento to the past.

Either way, this is one trend that will leave you dressed to impress. Vintage clothes are a fun way to explore other styles and garment shapes. Look up former style icons and see what looks they sported, try to emulate them to bring some diversity to your look.

Hint: Explore your local consignment shops and antique stores. You can find some of the most interesting jewelry and accessory pieces to add that vintage flair that never goes out of style!
