TREND: Military Chic

Justin Timberlake said it best: “What goes around, comes around” … and in fashion, you can count on any trend to make a comeback in style. One look that’s back for Fall 2011 is military-inspired clothing and accessories – both Burberry and William Rast designed next season’s collections with this trend in mind.

The most important rule with military style is to balance your edgy pieces with well-fitted, girly clothes. Today’s Fashionista, Alanna, is a step ahead of the game in her summer look. I love this vest (the brass buttons are perfect) layered on top of a dark tank. Army green is this trend’s signature color, but feel free to try it in navy or khaki, too.

Slim or skinny jeans tucked into boots are another great way to get the fashion-utilitarian look right. Stick with a polished, dark wash for your denim – distressed or frayed jeans are too distracting and messy (or swap in the famous J Brand twill cargos if you’re feeling extra trendy.) End with a pair of lace up booties: taupe for now, black for fall, and a five-inch platform heel for night.

Hint: Not sure if this style is you? Give this trend a try by topping off your favorite weekend look with a military cap or army-inspired shirt. At ease!

TREND: Layer for all Weather

Today's Fashionista was spotted on a beautiful Texas afternoon. While the sun peeks out for a few hours it's hard to predict what the weather will be like throughout the day. Today's Fashionista is prepared to take on anything the weather might throw at her. She pairs a military green chunky knit sweater with black lace-up booties to give off a tough meets feminine look. Wearing her gray socks on top of her pants allows us to see this Fashionista's hipster side and also is right on trend with the sock madness that has been going on the last couple months. She keeps the rest of her outfit sweet and simple letting her sweater, boots and socks do the talking.

Hint: When the weather gets a bit warmer don’t throw your booties in the back of your closet you can also pair them with shorts or a cute jersey dress to transition this footwear into spring.

TREND: Military Chic

One thing that I cannot wait to bring out this fall season is my favorite military jacket. Just take it from one of the biggest lovers of military chic; the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Bedazzled and embellished or clean lines and close fit, army surplus has been making a strong comeback in the fashion world, reintroducing combat boots, army green khaki jackets and structured military capes.

The great thing about a military inspired outfit is that it brings a sense of structure and edginess to any outfit, whether it be a flirty dress or leggings and a graphic tee like this Fashionista. But, being so masculine in nature, the best way to strut a military look is by pairing it with feminine accents.

This Fashionista paired her military jacket with an even edgier graphic tee and leggings. Metro Park has an amazing selection of graphics to really add some flare beneath a relatively disciplined look. Pairing it with studded leggings adds an rebellion for this tough Fashionista. For a more flirty look, couple your military jacket with a lightweight chiffon dress; for a more cold-weather appropriate looks, pick a sweater dress and tights with a pair of wedged boots.

However you wear it, I haven’t quite dismissed the military look from my closet. Although the King of Pop has passed, his music and his style have not. Long live the balmain jacket!

TREND: Military Chic

Attention! Salute! Now, drop and give me 20! I’m just kidding, Fashionistas, I seem to have gotten a little carried away by my current military obsession! One of my favorite looks for this fall is none other than military chic and I have been looking far and wide for an appropriate way to incorporate this trend into my own wardrobe.

This Fashionista has done exactly what I have been striving to do myself. Her army green jacket is effortlessly casual yet perfectly structured, which is always a very challenging combination to achieve. If you are looking for a great structured jacket similar the one this Fashionista is wearing, try something such as this. Another great part of her outfit is her cognac leather boots. I know, Fashionistas, you are all probably thinking “is she really talking about boots again?” Yes, I am afraid I am. However, I am drawn to these boots for one specific reason: their pointed toe! If you ask me, there is nothing chicer than pointed-toe shoes, whether they be boots, heels, or simple ballet flats. The final element of her outfit, her crossbody purse, is the icing on the military themed cake. The satchel-like design of her purse is reminiscent of the bags carried by soldiers in the civil war that we have seen in history books all too many times. Overall, this Fashionista has hit the perfect note when it comes to interpreting a runway trend for your everyday look.

Hint: Looking for a great, everyday purse that’s both practical and chic? Try a larger, crossbody leather tote such as this one on for size!

At ease, Fashionistas!
