TREND: Opposites Attract

Opposites attract is a saying commonly used in the world of dating, but now several Fashionistas are using it as their guideline for getting dressed in the morning. Instead of creating an outfit solely using ladylike clothing, they are mixing it up, adding in edgy and masculine pieces. This Fashionista is the perfect example of how to mix two extremes. When trying to put together a very feminine outfit, floral sundresses are almost always the pick of choice, and lace-up boots are a key piece in creating a tough girl look. By combining two pieces from entirely different looks, she was able to put together a perfect summer outfit.

Throngs of celebrities have already mastered this way of dressing, including Jessica Alba. She rocked an outfit similar to the featured Fashionista, wearing a floral sundress as well, pairing it with slouchy leather ankle boots and a distressed denim motorcycle jacket. Jessica Alba is no stranger to the boyfriend jean trend, but always manages to make her outfit look girly by wearing flats or opting for a tight fitting shirt on top.

There are a handful of other ways to incorporate somewhat contrasting elements into one cohesive outfit. Oversized blazers are a great way to add some masculinity to any outfit, but they look especially cute with floral dresses. If you want to up the ante a little bit, try adding oxfords for an even more boyish feel. If you're more interested in adding some edginess to your girly look, leather jackets are ideal. Small accessories and shoes can also make a big difference, including flats, fedoras and oversized watches

Hint: If you're having trouble creating a similar look, put together two different outfits to start with: one very feminine and one very edgy and/or masculine. Pick most of your pieces from one outfit (such as a dress and jacket), and then add one or two accents from the other outfit (like shoes and a hat).

  1. Thanks for these guidelines. One thing I should also believe is the fact credit cards giving a 0 interest rate often entice consumers along with zero interest, instant endorsement and easy on the web balance transfers, nevertheless beware of the number one factor that will void your current 0 easy street annual percentage rate and throw anybody out into the very poor house rapidly.

TREND: Opposites Attract

When the weather starts to get warm, people begin to pull out all of their light-colored clothing. This does not necessarily mean that it is required to put all dark clothing away though. This Fashionista did an amazing job of using simple, contrasting colors to make a bold contrasting statement. In order to pull off this effortless summer look, it is crucial to choose major focus colors that complement each other. In this Fashionista’s case, her choice of a loose white top with floral cutouts from H&M is the main focal point. She pairs it with a slimming black skirt from Free People that, although dark, does not overpower her top. If you are not into skirts, a pair of simple shorts would also work perfectly.

The most important part of this Fashionista’s outfit is her clothing, but an outfit is not complete without choosing accessories to accompany it. In this Fashionista’s case, she chose gold metallic accents– an oversized clutch from Tory Burch and T-strap sandals from Arturo Chiang. I love that she let these simple yet bold accents talk for themselves instead of piling on a lot of jewelry. It is important to remember that it is hot in the summer, so less is always more! If you like this Fashionista’s metallic accents, then try out a fun pair of sandals or a wallet that can double as a clutch!

Hint: While pairing black and white is obviously a good way to make a color contrasting statement, they are not the only colors that one could use; try using navy blue and yellow too!

TREND: Opposites Attract!

“Opposites attract” is a famous saying that we’ve heard our whole lives, though most likely not when talking about fashion. As a small child growing up, I’m sure you remember your mother picking out your outfit every morning in fear of you arriving to school wearing a bright yellow top and mismatching blue shorts, with all the moms wondering what mother let their child get dressed in the dark that morning. Slowly as you got older, your mother probably taught you “the rules of matching”, and routinely you learned to follow them. This week I’m challenging you to break the habit and try adding a colorful accessory that makes your outfit pop instead of blending into it.  Opposites not only attract, but they also help compliment any outfit.

This Fashionista could have easily paired her outfit with a simple, brown tote that would have matched perfectly with her outfit. Instead, by sporting a bright blue purse, she created a totally new look that is fun and daring. Adding color to your outfit is not limited to purses! If you’re wearing a neutrally themed outfit, throw on a flirty, fun pink headband, or a turquoise tank top; a simple touch a color can go a long way.

If you’re looking for some new, colorful accessories to add to your wardrobe, here are a few interesting pieces I found:

-a bright blue Patent Leatherette Skinny Belt from Forever 21

-this vivid purple Giani Bernini Handbag from Macy’s

-an intriguing, red Straw Floppy Hat from Urban Outfitters

This week's Fashionista made a statement and stood out simply by playing with accent colors and fun accessories. Now it’s your turn!
