June gloom has arrived, and Iowa City is its most recent victim. I can’t remember the last time we had steady sunshine. On any dreary summer afternoon, a surefire way to enhance your mood is to add some bright colors to your wardrobe. Whether it’s a pop of coral on your lips, a summery scarf or some turquoise jewelry, any sort of color added to your daily ensemble is bound to revive your smile. On a campus clad in gray and black on this muggy Iowa day, I spotted this fearless Fashionista coming out of her downtown apartment. Wham, my day was brightened. Suited up in a pair of red-hot denim skinny jeans, she was not going to let the clouds put a damper on her day.
Colors are more popular than ever this season. Although most colors seen on the runway this spring were more tropical hues (like coral, turquoise, and yellow), I cannot help but adore this fabulous pair of red jeans. Red is a go-to color for every season, whether it is worn on lips, feet, or legs. Red is always chic.
If you are daring enough to try the hot new trend of stand-out colors, I'd suggest two options when styling a bright bottom half. One is mixing in a neutral color palette, like this Fashionista did. Pairing bold pants with more muted tones, like beige, grey and white, focuses all the well-deserved attention on your “get me noticed” pants. Another option is sticking with the bright color theme and adding other bright pieces to your outfit. If you choose this option, pair with caution. Don’t mix bright colors that are of the same hue. Use completely different colors. For example, pair royal blue shorts with a girly, coral top or tangerine trouser pants with a teal oversized T-shirt. If skirts are a little more flattering on your body than skinny jeans, try this full-length chiffon skirt from American Apparel. Like most of their products, this skirt comes in a plethora of striking colors, including lavender, caramel and light turquoise.
It’s June, almost July. If the sun remains aloof, it’s up to you to shine. Forget easing into the warm weather with bright accessories. This summer calls for drama. Embrace bold. Embrace color. Let some bright colored pants or skirts steer your wardrobe into the sunny months ahead. Who knows where they will take you?
Hint: Colors as bold as true red or sunshine yellow, might be a little intimidating to you. If this is the case, I'd suggest trying a more muted color palette, such as plum or dark teal. These colors look great with prints, like plaid or cheetah, which will add some spunk to your outfit.
