TREND: Shining in Sequins

When I think of sequins, I think of two things: nighttime and winter. This Fashionista defied my expectations by rocking them during the daytime in the middle of spring, standing out amongst the sea of BU t-shirts and flip-flops dotting Commonwealth Avenue.

Worn with a funky green structured jacket and barely-there metallic sandals, her nude dress adorned with sequins really shines. The way she mixes a formal frock with more casual pieces makes her ensemble completely classroom appropriate. If you want to incorporate a sequined dress such as this into your work attire (hello, summer internships!), swap out the sandals for a dressier pair of flats.

Although sequins seem to make their heaviest appearance in the fashion world during the winter months, there is no reason to let yours collect mothballs in your closet until New Years Eve. For a night out this spring, take a dress like this Fashionista’s, pair with killer open-toe wedges, and voila! You’ll look stylish and spunky with a little dash of sparkle.

However, there are some sequin don’ts during the spring and summer months. Avoid sequins on dark colored garments – they look too formal and stuffy for warm weather. Similarly, frocks with all over sequins are bit too overbearing for a wardrobe consisting of jorts and floral sundresses. Look for items in nude or pastel tones with subtle sequins, just as this week’s Fashionista did.

The sun isn’t the only thing that has to shine this season – unleash your sequins to let your personal style shine through.
