With the coming and going of seasons, change is always eagerly anticipated. I can’t wait to bid farewell to snow boots and sweaters thick enough to insulate walls. However, there is one thing about winter that I’ll miss once spring rolls around: velvet.
This past winter season, velvet made a revival. I vividly remember a pair of royal blue velvet leggings that I rocked circa 1997, strutting down my elementary school hallways. This Fashionista dawns a similar pair in the year 2011, strutting outside the George Sherman Union at Boston University. She makes them current and chic by pairing them with a crisp blazer layered over a cozy cardigan and basic T-shirt. She brightens up her ensemble by wrapping a colorful scarf around her neck. Accessorized with cute moccasin booties, a masculine watch and a classic Longchamp Le Pliage bag, she is ready to take on the streets of Boston in style.
While the spring equinox is a mere 12 days from now, it may not be time to pack up your velveteen wardrobe essentials quite yet. March can be unpredictable weather-wise; it will likely be chilly for many more weeks to come. In my mind, as long as it’s cold enough to wear a coat outside, it’s cold enough to perpetuate winter trends such as velvet. Here are some velvet items I’d love to slip on:
1. Velvet Roses Skirt by Forever 21
2. Black Velvet Turband by Gold Saturn
3. “Grano” Printed Velvet Wrap Dress by Diane von Furstenberg
Further good news for velvet lovers: during the recent runway shows at New York Fashion Week, designers such as Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen projected that this luxurious material will be equally stylish come fall 2011. So why not stock up on next season’s must have before everyone else does?
