WEEKEND FORECAST: Vintage Coats and Bowler Hats

As the first week of term approaches, the creative minds of Goldsmiths are starting to re-appear more and more around the college. Being at such an artistic institute really showcases some great fashion trends that are not seen on a daily basis.

Today’s Fashionisto wears an incredible navy vintage coat from Shock & Soul vintage shop. The shop specializes in vintage French clothing, and as their website states, all of the clothing is specially handpicked and brought back to be sold from all around the world. Whilst chatting with the Fashionisto about his coat, he told me about all items of vintage clothing at Shock & Soul that are carefully restored and crafted to perfection. He pairs his great coat with a brightly patterned shirt which used to belong to his dad – also vintage!

 The Fashionisto also wears a pair of classic Doc Martens, one of the most practical and authentic type of footwear especially for climates such as London’s. As an accessory, he adds this timeless bowler hat, which only further ties the whole outfit together in vintage style. The look is greatly individualistic whilst at the same time a great example of the Goldsmiths student body.

 Another great thing about such extravagant trend-wearers is learning about the places they shop – most of which are unknown little stores and boutiques that tend to be underground yet showcase such great and unique apparel. These are definitely the types of places to roam around for that one-of-a-kind item that perfects your outfit and makes it unique to your own style!

WEEKEND FORECAST: Glitz and Glam

Well, Fashionistas, it’s a new year and a new semester, and that means its time to find new inspirations to refresh and refine our style. My favorite part about fashion for the holidays is all the sparkle. Glitter, sequins, rhinestones galore! But what happens to all of the glitz after we ring in the new year? Many stash their sparkly pieces away to the backs of their closets and don’t pull them out until the next new year. But this season I say, why not wear your sparkles during the day? The new trend is to wear your nighttime sparkles during the day. This Fashionista is wearing a sequined tank top with a tulle skirt and animal print heels. I love how she adds more glitter with her layered necklaces. Don’t be afraid to use sequins and rhinestones in your wardrobe, they can turn your daytime looks into something fun. Designers and boutiques are features all sorts of clothing with sparkle. Be sure to not go overboard with head-to-toe shine. Try pairing your glittery new years skirt with an oversized neutral knit. Or layer with sparkly embellishments to give a plain jacket or top some pizzazz.

Hint: If you want to think outside of the box with glitter, then try an accessory for your hair. They are called Bling Strands, a concept that puts a little shine in your hairdo. I saw them in a local beauty supply store in Bloomington. They come in an assortment of colors, and I think they’d be perfect for fun parties and events to add something unexpected to your look.

WEEKEND FORECAST: The Khaki Coat

Luckily, for those of us in Northeast Ohio, the cold weather has arrived. No more sundresses and sandals, so I hope you enjoyed those simple pleasures while you could. It's back to scarves and boots and layers and jackets and being so cold it’s impossible to get out of bed and go to class. Unfortunately for me, coats are not really my cup of tea, but that's probably because I've never really found one that I was in love with. That is until today, when I saw the coat of my dreams. Sadly, it wasn't in any store, but being worn by a fellow Fashion Design major walking across the Kent campus.

I was immediately drawn to the coat because of the amazing details like the gathered waist and sleeves, but upon closer inspection, I became even more obsessed with it. Not only does it have adorable, over-sized topstitching along the cuffs, pockets, and collar, but the coat is also completely lined in navy blue with white polka-dots! It's so cute, I can't even handle it. I'm not even going to mention the princess seams or slightly-puffed shoulders, because then you might just die of excitement like I did. This jacket is just too wonderful to be true.

And of course, being the Fashionista that she is, the rest of her outfit is amazing as well. From her billowy, exposed-zipper top, down to her polka-dot skirt and combat boots, she is a sight to be seen. I am proud to say that she can be seen strutting around my campus, setting an example for all the fashionistas out there. This fall, wear a jacket that stands out and is just as much a part of your great outfit as your top or skirt! Whatever you put on, make it count.
