WEEKEND FORECAST: Transition with Tights

Late autumn is pretty unpredictable, climate-wise, in Happy Valley. One day it’s 55 and sunny, the next it’s 35 with snow flurries. What to wear in the morning is sometimes a challenge with the wacky weather that’s been the norm. It’s not quite cold enough to pack away your favorite summer pieces until spring, but it’s also not warm enough to wear them on their own. Here’s a tip: tights! Tights are a fantastic way to transition your favorite shorts and skirts in your current wardrobe by looking fabulous at the same time.

I caught this Fashionista walking to class on a particularly chilly day rocking her favorite denim skirt on top of gray sweater tights. She looked cool, cozy and warm in her flannel, shearling lined leather jacket and desert booties (super adorable and added to my Christmas list). Take a hint from this Fashionista when peeking into your own closet for transitional wear. She looked effortlessly stylish and totally understood how to utilize pieces from every season in her closet and make them look chic.

Sweater tights are an awesome item to add to your holiday wish lists because there are endless ways to wear them. They look cute by themselves under a tunic or dress, or layered with shorts or skirts. Fall 2010 runway favorites such as Rag & Bone, Charlotte Ronson, and Proenza Schouler showed a lovely display of short and skirts over tights in their collections. This trend has staying power and will be great in the spring as the weather warms up with sheerer tights. For now, look for thicker opaque pairs in dark versatile colors.

Hint: As the weather gets colder, invest in heavy fabrics for shorts, skirts and tights/leggings. Also, try a tall pair of leather boots for added warmth. This combination is a great alternative to wearing jeans!
