WHAT TO WEAR: Internship

Blistered feet from new heels? Constantly readjusting yourself at your desk? Too hot during your commute but shivering in the AC? If these nuisances relate to your time spent at your summer internship, you need to listen up as if I was your supervisor — you have some important lessons on proper workwear to learn right away!

First, let’s talk about any girl’s favorite subject: shoes. Although heels can magically lengthen your legs, let’s be realistic; they can hurt too (thank goodness kitten heels are making a comeback). I strongly believe flats are the way to go when you’re trying to look professional but maintain comfort. A staple pair of black flats is a wardrobe necessity. If you’re looking to add detail to your outfit, try a bright color or embellished style instead.

No matter what your internship entails, you want to focus your attention on the work in front of you, rather than worrying if your chic ensemble still appears the way it did this morning. Skip the tucking in, fussy belts and pants that can never seem to stay cuffed and try a casual little black dress. It’s completely effortless to throw on if you’re rushing in the morning and you’ll look great all day — regardless of how many files you must organize or the number of trips you take to Starbucks.

To insure the “B” in LBD stands for black and not boring, don’t forget to accessorize. This Fashionista nails it with a turquoise and gold statement necklace and a matching gold watch and bracelets. She also sports a Longchamp Le Pliage tote that is perfectly practical in almost any setting and is another wardrobe staple you will get plenty of use out of. This summer, don’t stress and spend half of your paychecks on figuring out what to wear to work each day. Look for comfortable staples that are professional but look great too and then add your own personal style. You’ll feel so confident in your new look that no one will realize you’re only an intern!

One Simple Change: For a more casual look, throw on a denim vest and a spiky necklace. To add even more edge, swap the flats for nude gladiator sandals.
