What to Wear

Question from Chloe: I have been seeing white suits everywhere but how can I break it up and make it campus appropriate. Worn all together it looks kind of formal for my college classroom. Is there a more casual way to wear all white?

My Answer: This season white-on-white happens to be the chicest thing. Alexander Wang's spring 2011 collection showcased an absence of black while BCBG Max Azria's line was heavily influenced around light colors, so you are right that this look is very in style.

However, I understand that wearing too much white can be intimidating and sometimes unflattering. The first step in attempting to wear this hue is to find one piece that you feel confident wearing and that fits right. Whether it is white jeans, a white blouse or a white maxi skirt, find a piece that flatters your body. You can then begin to play with complementary pieces to pair with your ensemble. If a white blouse with white trousers doesn't seem to suit you, throw in another neutral colored item to balance out the look. Try wearing a cardigan over your white blouse to act as an accent color to your white outfit but also remain in neutral tones. Or opt for a white maxi dress rather then two separates to avoid having to match the same white shades together.

While white-on-white is the hottest thing on the runway this season, don't feel pressured to imitate this look exactly. Find interpretations of this trend that work for your body and make you feel confident. After all, fashion is about self-expression and feeling confident. No trend is worth taking that away.
