Question from Simran: I am starting college at the end of this month and I want to look good. My body size is slightly larger and I have trouble finding things that look good on me. Please suggest items for curiver girls to help us fit in and stay on trend.
My Answer: No matter your size, its always important to dress in silhouettes that flatter your figure.
For curvier Fashionistas, I always suggest finding outfits that accentuate your waist. Drawing attention to the narrowest part of your body highlights your most flattering area. For those pesky lectures, try belting an oversized white button down to give shape to this otherwise boxy look. Top off your ensemble with a fitted blazed, loafers and leggings. Presto- the perfect first day of class look guaranteed to get you noticed across the quad.
Another great tip piece for curvier girls is the wrap dress. First made famous by the iconic Diane Von Furstenberg, this shape draws the eyes to your most flattering areas and creates a great hourglass shape. What I love most about a great wrap dress is that it can take you almost anywhere on campus. Pair it with gladiators and a sweater as you head to class. Then, for a night out with friends, throw on a pair of oversized earrings (JewelMint, obviously) and a pair of boots. You can even pull off a wrap dress for many internships.
As far as footwear is concerned, be careful not to cut off your legs with a boot that hits you mid-calf. This unflattering shape often makes a person look thick and stocky. My tip for everyone is to find a great pair of nude heels. They accentuate your legs and make you look instantly taller and leaner. Who can say no to that?
No matter your body type, just remember that college is a great time to express yourself and experiment with personal style. Be bold and take chances. Good luck!
